Problems of the Heart
Chapter 12
by Sam Hackel-Butt (Age: 19)
copyright 05-24-2004

Age Rating: 13 to 127

“Michael, Elizabeth jumped from your mothers balcony again,” Ariel said to Michael at supper that night. “And she hasn’t left her room. She’s taken all the keys, and locked herself in.”
Michael sighed through a mouthful of chicken.
“Leave her. She’ll get hungry eventually,”
”But Michael, what if she’s upset? I don’t want a repeat of what happened to me.”
“Don’t worry. She’s not upset. If she was, we would of heard crashing and seen broken glass shards slip under her door.”
”You’re right, I guess. She’s probably just embarrassed because she landed on Jack and her blouse was open.”
Michael laughed, as he eyed the three boys sitting at the furthest table, heads put together, and food forgotten.
“They’re up to something,” Michael commented, braking a roll in half.
“Probably,” Ariel sighed. “I’ll alert the estate.”
She stood up and made her way to the kitchens.

Michael knew it wasn’t going to be a quiet night. Donovan had come up to him and asked permission for Jack to spend the night.
What else could he do? Refuse the kid because he had a suspicion?
So, Michael allowed Jack to spend the night.

It was still early evening. The sun wasn’t going to set for another hour or so, and Elizabeth planned to spend that time in the comfort of a lawn chair on her balcony. She grabbed a book she had to study, and opened the glass doors. There was a slight breeze, and it pushed the hair out of her face. When she walked out, she looked over the railing to see her brother and his friends throwing around a ball. She immediately pulled away from disgust.

She flopped down on the chair and opened the book to the page that was assigned. But her mind was elsewhere. Lying on her stomach, legs bent and feet in the air, she couldn’t help but feel warm. So, she lay on her back, and opened her blouse. No one could see her up here. She was five floors from the ground. But she was wrong.

“Learn to cover up,” said a voice so suddenly, it surprised her. She quickly sat up, closing her blouse tightly over her chest. The three boys were currently climbing over the rail obviously they had climbed up the wall.

“How’d you get up here?” Elizabeth gasped, getting up and backing into her room. They were now seated on the rail, legs dangling a few inches above the ground.
“We saw you turn back suddenly, and thought you’d hurt yourself. You are alright, aren’t you?”

She didn’t even respond to them. She just walked over, and pushed Aaron and Donovan backwards. They yelled, and went tumbling backwards to the ground.
When she placed her hands on Jacks chest to push him off too, he grabbed her wrists.
“It’s not nice to push,” he said.
“It’s not nice to spy on someone either,” she replied coolly. He stood up as she began struggling to get out of his grip.
“Let go,” she said, stepping backwards, trying to make him lose his grip on her wrists.

Soon they were in her room. Since she was walking backwards, she tripped over the leg of a chair, and went flying. Luckily for Jack, he let go just in time. Instead he closed and locked the door, and drew the curtain. He then sat down on the floor where he was standing.
“Alright fine!” Elizabeth said sitting up, and pushing her blonde hair out of her face. “You want to see my bra so bad? Fine, take a good look, then leave!” she said standing up.
She opened her blouse and took it off, dropping it on the chair. She did a little turn, holding her arms out so that Jack couldn’t miss a thing.
“Happy now?” She asked, as she reached for her blouse. But she found it was gone. Feeling vulnerable, she crossed her arms over herself.

Jack was standing now, the turquoise blouse in his hand.
“I never wanted to see you without your shirt. I closed us in here because I just wanted to talk.”
”Talk? That’s all? You nearly scare me half to death, cause me to trip and fall, make me strip, and then tell me you want to talk?” She went off in a wave of fury, pacing too and fro, muttering to herself.
She’s just like Donovan, Jack thought to himself.
Finally, she relaxed, and rested her head against a wall. When she turned around, she was immediately embraced in Jack’s arms, and his lips met hers.

She was suddenly ablaze with heat. Her face, she could feel, was flushed, and his hands were warm on her back. She pushed him away, almost reluctantly.
“What are you doing?” she asked, trying to break free of him, but he was holding on.

Adia, he’s so much taller then I, she thought. He was about a head taller then her, and almost as thin, but much stronger. Long and lanky. His eyes were a vibrant green, which stood out against his dark hair. He was wearing a white button up long sleeved shirt with the buttons open in the front, and riding pants in black. Riding boots were on his feet.

As much as she enjoyed the kiss, she didn’t want him to know. So it pained her when she blasted him across the room. He landed with a crash on a small table, causing the decorative bowl on it to smash.

“Don’t move,” she ordered, pointing a finger at him in a threatening manner, as he was trying to get up. “Yes, you just wanted to talk. You wanted to talk my foot.”
“As I’m not opening my door for anyone, you have two options. You stay locked in the bathroom all night, or you jump off the balcony. And tell my brother that he will never be leader. He doesn’t have the brain capacity to take hold of such a large responsibility. And-“

For someone who was only thirteen, she was smart, maybe even smarter than Aaron who spends his working time studying a dictionary, or a book about math equations.
“So will you be jumping, or should I get you into the bathroom and lock you in now?”
”Just hold on a second. Why do you think Donovan planned this?”
”Donovan, ever since he turned sixteen has been making my life a living hell. I can’t walk out of the house without him ordering me to do something for him as he’s going to be the next leader. And whenever I tell him it’s up to the people, he ignores me, and pushed me around. He’s always getting me in trouble with mother, father and grandmother. Even uncle Mateo, and he’s rarely ever here!”
”But Ryan doesn’t yell at you.”
”No, he doesn’t yell. He punishes. He sends me to my room and locks me in. I don’t know why they think they have authority over me. My parent’s fine, but not anyone else. And certainly not you or Aaron.” She glared at him

So here he was. Sitting in a room with his friend’s crazy sister. Crazy, but attractive for someone who is only thirteen. He was sure she tried to be different, as she wore her hair down, and hasn’t cut it in awhile. It was now at her waist. She was the spitting image of her mother. They both shared blue eyes, and were slim and tall. She was more developed then her mother, though, and she had put black ink in her hair to dye it in the past. Jack remembered the one time Elizabeth’s father needed to sign something important and couldn’t find any ink. When he had gone to her room to retrieve some, he walked in to a black haired girl drying her hair by the fire.

You should have heard the shouting in the estate that night! Michael had to be pulled out of the room by Donovan, himself, and Ryan, all the while screaming and struggling against their arms. Elizabeth had to be held back as well, but by Ariel. That night, Ariel had told Elizabeth to wash her hair until the ink came out. And when Elizabeth refused, there was another screaming match, and doors were slammed.

He smiled as he wiped his bleeding lip.
“What’s so funny?” Elizabeth ordered.
“Remember the time you dyed your hair with ink, and got the whole estate to ignore you for a week because they were afraid of your parents?”
Before she could respond, there came a banging on the door. Her head flew to look at the door and that was the mistake she didn’t want to make. She took her eyes off Jack. He got up as fast as he could, ignoring the pain in his legs and back, and tackled Elizabeth to the ground. She screamed, which made the banging get louder.
“What’s going on in there?” Someone demanded. It was Ryan, Jack could tell.
“Open this door, Elizabeth!” Mateo ordered.
Jack couldn’t respond, as he was struggling to keep Elizabeth down on the ground, her hands not pointing in his direction.
When no one answered, Ryan blasted the door down.
“What the hell is going on?”
As the men observed the battle zone, all they could find was a broken coffee tale and bowl, Jack with a bleeding lip, and Elizabeth with no shirt and Jack holding her down…
“Get off of her!” Mateo shouted, pulling Jack off of Elizabeth. They both sat on opposite sides of Mateo, breathing heavily, and glaring at each other.
“Someone tell us what’s going on,” Mateo said, looking at Elizabeth, then at Jack.
“It’s not of your damned business what happens in here,” Elizabeth answered getting to her feet. “This isn’t your house, and this is my room. I do as a please, and no one can order me around in my room.”

“The hell they can’t,” came Michael’s voice from the door. Ariel was behind him, pleading with him.
“Elizabeth, we spoke about this the other night. If you broke anything, hurt anyone, or did anything out of place, you were going to be severely punished.”

”What about Donovan?” She shouted. “He breaks rules all the time, and yet you’re blinded by his faults. He pointed a finger at Michael. “You just love him more because he’s your son. He’s going to follow in your footsteps. And what am I? You treat me like a dirty whore at a bar! You’re ashamed of me because I’m a girl, and won’t be Leader. Well guess what dad,” she said angrily, going to her dresser and taking out a shirt. “I’m leaving. I’ll leave you to your perfect son, and his perfect friends.”

They all stood in a shocked silence. The only one who moved was Elizabeth, who smashed the glass doors to the balcony.
“Elizabeth,” Ariel cried.
Elizabeth slipped on the shirt and leapt off the balcony just as the group tried to stop her.

After a moment of silence, it was broken by Ariel’s sobs.
“Find her,” Michael said out loud, and left the room.
