PayPal is a very secure and safe way to pay for internet purchases. Personally, in the 4 years or so that I have been using PayPal, I have never had a problem with them.
If you have a credit or debit card, you can make your first purchase using that through PayPal. They will also enrole you as a member at that time. You need a valid email address which becomes your account number.
Note: 04/2005 - PayPal no longer requires that you become a PayPal member. You can now simply use Credit/Debit cards or e-checks if you like.)
To pay member dues or buy more points just go to your author page and select the link to Pay Dues. A box will popup and take care to select the correct choice. You will then be taken to the PayPal site where you will need to complete the process. One tricky question they ask is the numbers on the back of your credit card. That is to help verify that you actually have posession of the card.
4/2005 - If you join PayPal:
PayPal can then be tied you your checking account. You decide how and when to move funds into or out of your PayPal account. PayPal will verify the account that you provide by making two small deposits to the account, under 50¢. You then go to PayPal and tell the amount of those deposits. That verifies that you do have access to the account.
Although I have never experienced an unauthorized withdrawal by PayPal from my account, at the advice of my bank, I opened a secondary, Internet account. I keep only a small amount in that account so should there be a problem, then I can stop payment and even close the account if necessary. So I have an account for Prose-n-Poetry, my main account and another for internet. The Prose-n-Poetry account is based on a DBA (Doing business as) which is a sole proprietorship, meaning a business account owned by one person.
I would also advise an internet account if you wish to be 100% free of worry. It can also be used for other net purchases. My accounts all have on-line access so I can transfer funds easily form one account to another.
PayPal can be used from many countries (83 I believe)and it is a safe easy way to send money to anyone who has an email address. The one problem is that in order for them to actually get the money, they must have an account with PayPal and it must be tied to their bank account so they can transfer funds to their bank account. A transfer usually takes only 3-4 business days so it is quite rapid.
4/2005 - PayPal now issues MasterCard Debit Cards which can be used to withdraw funds from an ATM or spend on purchases. You must be a PayPal member and apply to get the PayPal Debit Card.
One major warning is that there are unscrupulous people on the net who will PRETEND to be representing PayPal. They will try to get your account numbers under various disguises. This should NOT reflect on PayPal itself. PayPay roots them out as quickly as they can. There are guides at PayPal.com to help you avoid this problem. The main one is this: Once you give your information at PayPay, they will NOT ask for it again. Forward any emails that you get asking for your account numbers to PayPal so they can deal with the attempted thefts.
Never, Ever give these "Psuedo PayPal" sites nor any other site any of your access information, passwords, bank accounts etc !
4/2005: I did have a problem recently. I was accidentally double-charged for an item. An email, followed by a call to their customer service resolved the problem. A man, Tom, helped see that I was refunded the excess charge. I'd give an A+ for their customer service.
sincerely
