The Chosen
Chapter 11
by Natalie Amaral

Kaitlin.

The voice sounded muggy and cloudy through Kaitlin's unconscious mind, but there was a ring of familiarity to it.

"Kaitlin, can you hear me?"

Kaitlin's eyes fluttered opened breifly when she realized that she wasn't dreaming.

"Kaitlin," the voice called softly, "do you recognize me?"

"Jane," Kaitlin sighed.

"Kaitlin, I know you're not feeling well. But I need to know what happened tonight. Do you think you can talk about that?"

Kaitlin slowly nodded.

"Okay. I know you were on you're way to my place. Were you alone?"

Kaitlin shook her head.

"Who was with you?"

"Lucien . . . DeNieux . . ."

"Is that the guy who you thought was following you?"

Kaitlin nodded.

"Were you accompanied with him?"

"Yes. He wanted . . . to take . . . m-me . . . to your office . . ."

Jane was silent for a moment before she said, "Was he the guy that brought you here?"

Kaitlin nodded.

Jane frowned and asked, "Was he the one that scared off David?"

Kaitlin nodded.

A realization came over Jane's face before she sighed. "Okay, Kaitlin. Thank you; you've just answered everything I needed to know."

Jane almost rose to her feet before Kaitlin gripped her arm. Jane was startled with the sudden look of intensity in Kaitlin's eyes.

"N-not . . . h-human," Kaitlin whispered before she surrendered to oblivion.

***

Jane stared at Kaitlin's limp form, almost horrified at her words. What in the world could she have meant by that?

This was so confusing. Lucien saved Kaitlin's life. If anything, she should have WANTED to see Lucien. Instead, she was terrified of him. Clearly, if Lucien had attacked David only to save Kaitlin, he had done it in a way that caused her to panic.

Jane turned and walked out of the room; she had even more questions to be answered. However, when she had stepped out, she saw that Lucien and John were gone.

Oh wow, what a place to leave me! ~laughing~ I really do like Lucien despite his being a vampire. I think he really cares for Kaitlin. Oh gosh, looking forward to the next!
