When he returned to Elizabeth, he told her what happened while she got dressed. She shooed him out of the shack, and he spoke to her through a little window.
“Really? That’s so kind of him! What do you think?” She said, stepping out the shack door.
“Lovely,” Jack said with a smile.
The dress Elizabeth put on was crimson red, which glinted orange in the sunlight. It was a traditional Kanta style with long sleeves, moderate neckline, and a thousand layers of skirts all in red, orange, and creamy pink. She wrapped the shawl around her waist, and looked up and Jack.
“You want your shirt back, or are you going to get yourself some new clothes too?” Elizabeth asked.
“I’ll go shopping, but first I’ll bring you to Polly. Remember, you’re Molly. We were married a few days ago,” Jack began as they walked up the sand to the edge of the city, handing the bag of dresses to Elizabeth. “You’re twenty, I’m twenty-three. You love the Koura dress, and like wrapping your shawl around yourself when you go for strolls.” Jack looked at her eyes, then her shawl, then back to her eyes. She got the message, and wrapped the shawl around her shoulders.
“Well, here we are,” Jack announced. They were standing in front of the shop where Polly worked. It was a nice little place, made of dark wood and green tinted windows. Blue and white-checkered drapes hung on the inside, and dresses hang in the front window.
“Well, let’s go in,” Elizabeth said, pushing ahead, and entering. Jack entered after her.
Polly looked up as they entered, and smiled as he saw Jack’s face.
“Charlie! Glad you’re back. And this must be Molly,” Polly said coming out from behind the counter and shaking Molly’s hand. “You look stunning in that color. Red suits you. And I believe blue would, as well.”
Elizabeth smiled. “Why thank you Polly. And I must thank you for letting us stay with you and your wife. You are ever so kind.”
“Well I’m off to get myself some of Koura’s clothing as well,” Jack said giving Molly a kiss on the cheek. “Behave now.” Jack stepped out of the shop, and Polly and Elizabeth were alone. Elizabeth was a little red from the kiss, but blamed it on the heat when Polly inquired.
“I’d better show you the house. And your room,” Polly said, leading his way down a center aisle. Elizabeth followed, and found herself facing a tiny woman with glasses too big for her. She had wispy gray hair in a loose ponytail in back of her head.
“Who’s this young lady, Polly?” She asked him as he took her side.
“This is Molly. She and her husband will stay with us for a little bit. They’re on their honey-moon,” he said with a grin.
“Why on earth would you stay with us, dear? You could go to a nicer place, and have more privacy.”
”It would be fine here,” Elizabeth said, nearing Polly’s wife. “And I’m ever so grateful. After traveling for so long, it’s nice to be back in a household with parents. I do get a bit homesick now and then, so it would be perfect if we could stay.”
“Why of course, dear!” She said, eyes lighting up. “I’m Katherine. You can call me Kate, Katie, whatever. Now come, I must show you around,” Katherine said, taking a hold of Elizabeth’s arm, and tugging her towards the stairs. Polly stood by, and waited till they began ascending the stairs before following. Katherine opened a door at the top of the stairs, and they all stepped into the middle of a hallway. Katherine turned to her left, and showed Elizabeth the bathroom, kitchen, and a bedroom. Then she turned down the way she came to the right side of the hallway where the rest of the bedrooms were, an office, and a sitting room.
“You and your husband can stay in the bedroom over by the kitchen,” She said, walking back to the left side of the house, and opening the door. Katherine waited for Elizabeth to enter before walking in after her. Elizabeth, the instant she walked in, was at home. The walls were painted a deep red with yellow roses. Furniture was in a buttercup yellow, which included two chests at the food of oak framed beds on the right side of the room, the frame of a full-length mirror, as well as the doorframes. Pictures of wild flowers, and children decorated the walls. The bedspreads were the same red color as the walls. Separating the two beds was a night table with an oil lamp standing in the center. In front of the door, in the back of the room was a window with yellow drapes. Elizabeth walked over to gaze out, and had a perfect view of the city’s busiest cluster of shops.
“It’s beautiful,” Elizabeth said almost breathless, turning around to face Katherine.
“Glad you like it, dear. My two daughters stayed in this room until they got married and moved out. Although, one of my sons and his wife still live here. They just come and go so often you barely ever see them. They’re very busy starting their own jewelry empire.”
”Which is stupid of them,” Polly said from behind Katherine. “Their own Jewelry Empire,” he repeated, and spat to the side.
“Don’t mind Polly, Molly dear. He doesn’t like his eldest sons decision of career.”
Katherine then pushed Polly out of the room, and told Molly she’ll tell her when her husband got back, and left the room.
When Katherine was down the hall, she gave Polly a smack, which Elizabeth heard loud and clear after she shut the door. She took off her shawl, and draped it over the side of the bed and sat down, dropping her bag. She looked around again, and felt her eyelids grow heavy. Yawning, she got up and drew the curtains. She didn’t have any nightgowns, so she ventured into the chest at the foot of the bed, and found beautiful nightgowns in lavender, pink, dark blue, and light yellow. She also found a night robe in shimmery pink. The only thing she didn’t like about it was it was almost transparent. She also found a few towels, handkerchiefs, hair elastics in a small box, socks, under garments, books, and a hair brush.
She then took her bag, and found a closet by the door. It must have been hidden, because when the door to the room was open, it covered the closet door. She opened the door, and saw even more dresses hanging neatly on hangers in plastic. She added her dresses to the bunch, and dressed for a nap. She climbed under the covers, and found that even though they weren’t as luxurious as the ones in the estate, it was the most comfy bed she’d ever been in. While lying in bed, her thought drifted to the fight, and she closed her eyes, trying to forget. But how could she forget when she was in a stranger’s house, wearing a stranger’s nightgown, and lying in a stranger’s bed? She never did get past that question, as sleep conquered.
When she awoke, Jack was sitting on the edge of the bed by her side, shaking her, and repeating her name. She just opened her eyes a bit, and then rolled over, her back facing Jack.
“Oh no, you don’t,” he said, standing up and pulling the covers back.
Elizabeth tried to swat him away and get the covers back, but he grabbed her hand and pulled her up to a sitting position.
“What?” She asked angrily, rubbing her eyes.
“You can’t sleep,” he said.
“Sure I can,” she said, lying back down.
Jack sighed. “It’s the middle of the afternoon! We’re supposed to do our act.”
”Then come,” she said sleepily, pulling Jack down next to her. “We’ll do our act sleeping. Now good night.” She pulled up the covers, and soon she was sleeping again.
He sighed again, and got up, lifting Elizabeth and the covers up off the bed.
“Hey!” She complained, kicking and thrashing.
“You have to get up. Their son has returned, and I don’t think it would be nice for them to walk in to the room and find us here.”
”Fine,” Elizabeth said with a pout, and Jack put her down. He began to make the bed, but Elizabeth shooed him out.
She should look casual, she should think, but not too casual, as she had just arrived there. So she picked out a periwinkle colored dress, lacking sleeves, and put it on. It had a high neckline, and was a bit tight around her hips. It went straight down to her ankles in the front, but continued to the floor in the back. She put on a pair of socks she found at the back of the closet, and brushed her hair. She made the bed quickly, and tidying up the nightgown. She opened the door, and made her way down the hall to the sitting room where she heard voices. She was halfway down the hall when Katherine came out, looking happy. She stopped Elizabeth with, “congratulations!”
“Congratulations? For what?” She asked.
“For your pregnancy! My, what a lucky couple you are. Having a child so early.”
Elizabeth stood there, dumb founded.
“Are you alright dear? You look a bit pale. Are you feeling sick?” Katherine buzzed around her, questions at every opportunity.
“Just get Charlie to our room,” she said shakily, hurrying back to her room.
Jack burst through moments later, and wished he hadn’t. Elizabeth closed the door and stood in front of it as Jack stood by the beds.
“Pregnant.” She hissed.
Jack smiled a guilty little smile, and began looking uneasy.
“Pregnant,” She said in a slightly louder voice.
“Now look, I was under pressure! They asked why I wasn’t enrolled in the army, because I was the prime age. I said I was excused because you were pregnant.”
”Pregnant!” she screeched. “With all your excuses and lovely lying mind, you couldn’t think of another reason? Like you injured your foot, or your father was gravely ill and you were the only one able to care for him. But no, you had to pick pregnancy! The ultimate weapon. But guess what,” she fumed. “I’m not pregnant, and don’t plan on being pregnant. There’s no way past this! Now I’m stuck with the choice of getting pregnant, or marching in there, and telling them the truth. How you turned your back against your city, and how I was stupid enough to go along with your plan!”
”Calm down, Elizab-“
“It’s Molly! Adia, you can’t even play your own plan right!”
“Fine, Molly, we’ll think of something.”
”No, I’ll think of something. And your not leaving to ruin anything else, so sit down.”
Jack obeyed, and sat on a bed as Elizabeth paced around, pausing here and there. Sitting, then standing, and pacing some more.
What’s the deal with being pregnant? A lot of women want to have children, and can’t. But maybe it’s because she doesn’t want to sleep with him in order to get pregnant.
“Maybe not with you,” he told himself. He sighed. Maybe there could be a miscarriage? But she’d still have to go along with a bit of cooperation in morning sickness, cravings, and so on. But she won’t listen to him, so that idea was lost.
After another ten minutes of planning, she couldn’t think of a way out. She’d have to have a baby. But she was scared of the laws. But maybe it was different here… and maybe it wasn’t. And if she asked, they’d know for sure they weren’t married, and they’d be in trouble. She’d be found out, handed over to the leader, and her father would have to pay. Jack would get killed for being a traitor. Not only was she scared for all those reasons, it was conceiving the baby. She had feelings for Jack, but they weren’t that strong. Obviously Jack’s feelings for her was greater then hers for him, so he’d have no problem with her decision.
“Alright,” she said making her way to Jack and standing in front of him.
“Alright?” he asked.
“Get me pregnant,” she said.
