John saw Jane's name on his pager and sighed.
"It's that detective lady, isn't it?" Lucien asked.
John nodded. "I warned you--she can be restless. She won't stop until she has all her questions answered. That's why she was one of my top officer when she worked for me."
Lucien nodded. John didn't have to tell him that; Lucien sensed that about her the instant he met her.
"By all means, go on and meet with her," Lucien said. "I can't stop you where she's concerned. Just . . . don't let her know about me and . . . what could become of Kaitlin. It would be best if she didn't know about it."
John nodded. "Alright, then."

Jane watched as John walked off the elevator and approached her. "Jane, until you called me, I had no idea you'd still be here."
"Well, I am. Where's your friend?"
"What friend?"
"Lucien DeNieux."
A frown came upon John's features. "Why would I know?"
"Well, last night, you two seemed quite friendly with one another. It's also quite coincidential that you've gone at about the same time as he is."
John stared at her. "Why are you speaking to me that way?"
"What way?"
"Like I'm a suspect."
"I don't know. Should I?"
John shook his head, stunned. "I can't believe what I'm hearing! I am your superior officer."
"Uh, no, former superior officer. You're retired, remember?"
John remained silent.
"Now, I have some questions, and I want some answers."
"Such as?"
"How well do you know Lucien?"
"I just met him last night," John insisted. "I was speaking to him, yes, but only because I was questioning him."
"About?"
"About bringing her here, about what happened and such. Believe me, he was much distressed."
Jane frowned. "Did anything unusual come up in your conversation?"
"Not really, no."
Jane slowly nodded. "What about his attacking David?"
John remained silent and gave her a startled glance. It was obvious he wasn't prepared for that question.
"Did he mention anything about it?" Jane asked.
"He mentioned he attacked a man who was attacking her, yes. It was only done to protect her, though."
"That's all you know?"
"Yes! Jane, where is all this going?"
"I had just questioned Kaitlin not too long ago. Before I left the room, she said something which confused and scared the hell out of me."
"Such as?"
"She said 'not human'. I don't know why, but I have a nagging suspicion she was referring to Mr. DeNieux. Would you know anything about that?"
John slowly shook his head. "Not at all. That is mind-boggling."
Jane studied him closer. As much as she didn't want to admit it, she knew he was hiding something.
