You’ve stood at my side all these years,
Helping me wipe away the tears.
At age 1,
You taught me how to run.
I fell down on my knee & started to cry
But you sternly looked me in the eye
So I wiped away my tears
And with them went my fears
At age 2,
I taught you to tie your shoe,
You laughed when you got it right
I laughed too, feeling I made you bright.
At age 3,
You taught me to trace my hand
It was simple stuff, but I didn’t understand
So you gently took my hand,& placed it down
Then you grabbed the orange crayon
You traced each finger slowly, one by one
I stared, transfixed, when I saw it done
At age 4, you had to move away
We said our tearful goodbyes on Ocean Parkway.
I took your hand & held it tight,
Promising to think of you day & night.
Age 5 to 6 I called you in Rome
Hoping to hear you say you’re coming back home
I called you with homework, problems & fears,
Hoping you’d be able to wipe away the tears.
On my 7th birthday I called & you weren’t there
I was filled with emotional fear & despair.
But I sagged with relief recognizing your red hair flying across the lawn
I recognized your figure from 2 years ago although it was Dawn
You’d come back home!
You were back to stay from that dreaded Rome.
We spoke to each other, day & night
Weather the sky was dark or light.
I told you about my mother’s shock over her first white hair.
You told me about riding a rare golden mare.
At age 8, you told me we could both fly if we try.
Not believing you I stared you in the eye.
But all I saw was your secretive smile.
Your secretive smile stretched over a mile.
You taught me how to use my imagination & proved to fly you don’t need wings
Our first adventure together was to Britain, & our souvenirs were 2 of the Queen’s diamond rings.
When we were 9 for Mothers Day we decided to bake a cake
All we managed to create was a huge chocolate lake.
When our mothers came back from their walk you explained like a real friend should.
All I did was confess the surprise
Instead of doing all I could.
When we were 10 we decided to go together on the slide.
It was not a happy ride.
I broke 2 bones & you broke 3.
You also managed to sprain your knee.
Going to the hospital was one of my many fears.
But once again you wiped away my tears.
We’ve been there for each other through good times & bad.
We’ve learned that together we’ll never be sad.
Weather we are together or apart
We will always be in each other’s heart.

Awww, that is so sweet it put tears in my eyes. I never had a friend like that. come to think of it, I did, when i was 1-4. He was my first crush, but we lost contact. I love this, it's so sad yet happy.
This one reminds me of a friend I once had. We promised to be friends forever. We were there for the good and bad. We laughed and we cried together. But sadly now I am lost with out him, for he is gone to us all. Thank you for bringing back his memory to my life. It was all well needed.
Wow. What a wonderful job! I really liked the innocence, the truthfulness, and the feeling. It reminds me of a poem by an unknown author my mother once read to me...
Friend of mine, I think of you
At least once every day
I wonder what you're doing
and if I can help in any way
The miles have crept between us
and are trying to keep us apart
But they'll never succeed in doing that
You're always in my heart!
I LOVE THIS!
It's so well written, and it truly shows the bond and closeness friends have growing up. But Rome doesn't sound too bad :P But then again, when your young, everything's an adventure beyond the yard.
