Bits & Pieces
by Walter Jones (Age: 63)
copyright 07-26-2004

Age Rating: 4 to 127

Heard the footsteps in the rain

Picked, looking for my child brain

Know that the midnight train

Doesn’t run no more

Closed up Fred's old grocery store

Post office moved up town

Sloughs across the river dry

Water's been down

County moved the Church upon the hill

Kids switched from smoking to pills

Me, I just don’t belong

Lost just like the old town

Age and time blend in one

Soil is dry, crops won’t grow

Kids just smile and say, I know

Damn, I hate this nursing home

Walt, I love the natural pace and drawl of this piece. You've captured the motion of time through the eyes of home, and allowed the reader powerful insight into an age that is already a historic touchstone in the American mindset. I say well offered and structured.

Walter this is so powereful I couldn't believe it hadn't been read extensively.....are we becoming extinct....do maybe they not perceive....Gosh I loved it.....from the first to the last line....you know we all are ten feet tall and bullet proof....and only around 50 do people even have a perception of mortality.....gosh lets do an inservice on it.....Great writing....really down to earth, how it is, but most don't want to know...but as poets....isn't that our mission...
