Bunny issued a challenge, and I accept, but I didn't want to copy her idea, so I had to make some of the words have a different meaning than I think they actually have. The list: holler, sissy, bubba, prairie oysters, hawg, possum, maters, hitched, bloomers, hoe down, moonshine, poke bonnet, tabaccie, rain barrel, yungins, low-down, good ol' boy, cellar, out-backs two seater, buckeye, slop jar, likker, hillbilly, spit-tun
I was born down by the holler fifteen yars ago, ten month afore sissy come along; that makes me the big sister.
Bubba, down yonder by the crick, wal he, seemed kinda sweet on me. Last fall he brung me some prairie oysters, what momma cooked up in cornmeal, I had to put molasses on ‘em to choke ‘em down, theys hardly what I wud like to eat considering whar they cum frum.
The first time I laid eyes on Bubba, he was chasing a hawg down the road, seems it was one of his maters and he needed it to start a good hawg farm.
That hawg got his path crost by a possum and he was spooked and onery, but Bubba hitched up his bloomers and threw a hoe down in front of him to stop him. That there hawg jes glistened in the moonshine, it were so purty I spit out my tobaccie and ran to put on my poke bonnet, so I could look good, y’all know what I mean? I guess I should have watched my step, I fell into the rain barrel, there wuz a pack o younguns laughing at me, those lowdown brats, I hadda mind to shove them in the cellar but they ran and hid in the outbacks two seater, there wuz lotsa room for them in there, I made it kinda unpleasant for them tho, jes took the slop jar out and left it tight in front of the door so’s they cuddn’t get out without spillin it all over the yard.
Anyway, to get back to my story, momma had him come to dinner and we had buckeye peas and red eye gravy to go with the prairie oysters along with some real good corn likker that daddy had saved for a speshul okaishun, since Bubba brought Daddy a real tin spittoon to add some class to our place and we hillbillies shoor do like class!
