If That's What Beauty is
by Delaney Lindley (Age: 18)
copyright 06-10-2005

Age Rating: 13 to 127

Kate Moss' anorexic body
Mary-Kate almost died to get it
The look we've strived so hard to get away from
The curves on a woman's body
Disreguarded to go down the other path
Straight and narrow
If this is what I should be
I don't want to be it

Most beautiful woman in the world
Different body frame than mine
Her eyes cold and dead that have no feeling
No emotions to be read
If this is what "Beauty" is
You can have it back

I like the way I am now
And no one has a right to compromise that
We're to accept who we are
And accept what we're not
And we're expected to know the difference
While others cry to some unearthly being
To make themselves look like the model on tv
The model looks back at them and dreams
She could be that free
Eating doughnuts is a sin
And that's the way it is to be

Cheekbones sunken
Skin pale and powdered
Instead of warm and sun-kissed
Hair beautiful and shimmering instead of my mediocre locks
But I can enjoy an ice cream without guilt
Without having to pray for any kind of forgiveness from those who look upon me
I admit at times
I once was too scared to eat
Being anorexic almost was the end of me

Holding onto myself by a thread
I suddenly shouted "I'm tired!"
And everyone just gasped
My mother cried and knew that once again
I could have her home-cooked meals
I could once again go to McDonald's
And not be afraid
To see my once enemy-now turned friend
in a mirror

But the models may always stay beautiful
I couldn't care less
The product that they sell won't pass time's test
When other girls like me
Stand and raise their hands and say "I'm tired!
I don't have the strength to fight!"
The runners on the tracks will stop
The applause will be heard around the world
When we all join in and admit
"We are beautiful"
And join in the chorus
"If that's what beauty is-
They can have it!"

You know the sign "Dangerous curves ahead?" That's what I like to see. Skinny doesn't cut it. In my youth Marilyn Monroe was a classic, yet if you look at her pictures, she wasn't slim and straight. The girl had curves, beautiful, wonderful curves.
