When Kaitlin awoke, it was just a struggle to open her eyes. When her vision cleared, she realized she was looking at Lucien.
"Please," he said, holding her hand in his, "don't be afraid."
Kaitlin stared at him. "N-not . . . human."
Lucien gave her a sad look. "No, unfortunately, I'm not. I assure you, I never . . . wanted to be this. I don't want you to be this, either."
Kaitlin frowned.
Lucien listened to her thoughts for a moment, and wasn't surprised to find that she was confused.
"This isn't something I can explain so easily," he said. "All I know is . . . I only meant to attack David to protect you, not to kill him. As far as I know, he's turned himself in."
A brief look of calm came across her features, but Kaitlin didn't say anything.
"As for myself, I had only wanted to take you to that detective so that she can help you get away from him. But we now know the results of that happening."
Kaitlin sighed. "What . . . d-did you . . . p-plan . . . to . . . d-do to . . . m-me?"
Lucien sadly shook his head. "I want to stop the same fate . . . of which occurred to me . . . to happen to you. The only way you can do that is to let me help you."
Kaitlin rolled her eyes and passed out. The brief conversation had worn her out. Lucien wasn't surprised to see her do so.
Yet there was definitely something slightly different about her condition. It was definitely the same as his was, there was no question about that.
But her case . . . her transformation was progressing at a much faster rate than his ever did. This puzzled and frightened him at the same time.
There was another way she may have been undergoing this change, and the thought repulsed him. However, Lucien couldn't rule out such a possibility.
Slowly, tentatively, Lucien turned her neck to the right before his heart stopped cold. On her throat, just above the jugular vein, he saw two small puncture wounds: teethmarks.
Lucien jumped backwards, quickly shaking his head. "No," he whispered, not wanting to believe what he was seeing. "Dear God, no."
