If in our rambles,
We visit the Campbells
We'll sure have to travel far North;
We'll pack up supplies.
Get some shades for our eyes,
Take precautions as we sally forth.
We'll be sure to wear snowsuits
And great big Skidoo boots
And take food for the dogs' evening snack;
For we may have to mush
Through ice, snow and slush
And good food will get their strength back.
We'll get an "up north chart"
And learn trails by heart
To get to the Campbells' front door,
We'll always be welcome
Fed, watered and then some
So we'll come back to visit some more.
The place name they say
Keeps fading away
From my memory and I can't recall,
I know it's a city
It's cold and it's pretty
A color, a thing and that's all...
It's easier I find
To bring it to mind
If I think of days now long gone
When in chain mail or armour
A good guy was a charmer
And he rode on a Whitehorse (Yukon)

Thanks, Beverley! My friends were moving, as you can likely tell, and I couldn't keep in mind where they were going, kept thinking of Yellowknife, you know so many places have names that start with a colour like Red Deer, Yellow River, Green River....I wanted a way to remember and believe it or not, we lived about 12 miles away from a town called Galahad (that gave me the idea of a knight in shining armour, hence white horse for a steed....
Very good poem and made me smile. I recall so many people asking me if we ever had summer up in the NWT. And if the snow ever melted. And I always laughed. For me, the fall is the BEST time in the Yukon and NWT - no bugs and lots of beautiful fall foliage. Enjoyed your poem!
