Problems of the Heart
Chapter 24
by Sam Hackel-Butt (Age: 19)
copyright 09-05-2004

Age Rating: 10 to 127

They all paused, and sat still as a fury of guards went rushing past the sitting room door.
Maria and Cara sent uneasy glances at Heather, who returned them.
“Stay here,” Donovan ordered, getting up and leaving the room. While closing the tall door leading to the sitting room, he saw Cara and Maria sit on either side of Heather, and watched him before he disappeared behind the door.

He took a few steps when the front door opened, and the guards that were outside around the gate came jogging in. None of the guards knew where the bang originated, causing mass confusion. Servants soon poked curious heads out from their quarters, and doors flew open on every floor in the estate. It was quite a noise to be heard. Fifty or so doors slamming open all at once, and people filing down the stairs and standing in the entrance hall. General Andarie soon came to the stairs with Jack’s arm in his grasp and Ryan in step behind.
“Elizabeth,” Donovan whispered. “Where’s Elizabeth?” He shouted over the noise.
The guards immediately went thundering up the stairs. Jack sent an anxious stare at Donovan who didn’t bother to break it as he did when he went to see him before.
“General Andarie, release Jack,” Donovan said, running up the stairs to them.
“I have strict orders from your parents not too,” he said angrily.
“I order you to release him now!”
General Andarie grumbled and said a few things under his breath before letting Jack’s arm go. Ryan asked for a reason, but didn’t get one as Jack and Donovan went running up the stairs.

“Can you sense her?” Jack nervously asked. He was more nervous for himself them Elizabeth at the moment.
Donovan paused for a second, and then said to himself, “There’s General Andarie… and Ryan… but… who’s that?”
There was another bang, which seemed to shake the Estate. Women shrieked in the entrance hall, and more guards came thundering up the stairs.
“They're going the wrong way,” he said. “He’s downstairs, in the cellar!”
Donovan went running down the stairs two at a time with Jack sliding down the banister to his side. That would cost Jack. Naturally Jack reached the ground before Donovan, and had to pick at a wedgie, dancing around uncomfortably while some of the women noticed, and laughed.
“Stop goofing around,” Donovan said sternly, scurrying towards the cellar stairs. Jack stopped picking at it, and then followed.
Donovan put out an arm, stopping Jack before he went tumbling down the stairs.
“He’s down there,” Donovan said, slowly putting his foot down on the first step. “Be quiet,” he whispered.
The two of them quietly went down the cellar steps until Donovan paused.
”What?” Jack hissed.
Donovan shrugged, and continued. He strained his ears, trying to hear something other then his beating heart. He could see someone moving in the light, and the edge of a dress swish out in front of the stairs. Donovan stopped again, as did Jack. Jack then took a step, and craned his neck to look around Donovan. Donovan’s hand glowed blue as he edged further. The person seemed to stop, and that’s when Donovan jumped the remaining four or five steps, and attacked. There was a small gasp of surprise as Donovan attacked, causing dust to creak out of cracks in the walls, the top of crates, broken chairs, tables, and stands of wine bottles.

“Donovan!”
“Huh?”
”What are you doing?! Are you trying to kill me?”
”Elizabeth?”
”Who else!?”
Donovan ceased fire, and when the dust settled, and the air cleared, there was Elizabeth standing, looking very angry.
“But- how did- I- I-… What were you- how the hell did your aura change?” Donovan finally said.
“Like I know,” she snapped.
“What was all the banging?” Donovan demanded.
“Banging?” she asked.
“Yes, banging. We heard banging from upstairs. It shook the whole estate for crying out loud! How did you do it?”
”I didn’t,” Elizabeth said surprised.
“Then who-“ Donovan was cut off with another bang, and what followed was what sounded like hundreds of bricks smashing into the ground.

Elizabeth was the first to run up the stairs, leaving Donovan and Jack to exchange curious looks.
A few of the servants called out to her when she emerged, but she ignored them, running to the back of the estate, exiting through a back door.
“Watch out!” Jack cried, grabbing her around the waist and pulling her back. Seconds later, brick and stone came tumbling down where Elizabeth was standing. Jack let her go, and she turned to face him. She was about to thank him when General Andarie came running towards them, grabbing Jack by the arm.
“Ryan and I have found the perfect way to clear your name,” he said in a demonic way. “You my friend will be joining the guards. For ten years.”
Jack slowly nodded his head, accepting the punishment.
“And we know what’s going on already Elizabeth,” he said softly to her. “Some guy was trying to break through your room.”
“Why?”
“Apparently, the price on your head has increased. So get inside, now!”

Elizabeth obeyed, and ran to the stairs. She calmed down the servants, and sent them back to relax, giving them the day off. She then proceeded to her room where guards came out with a man dressed in black, in cuffs. His skin was tanned a deep golden brown, his eyes brown. His hair a mass tangle of brown and dark blonde. The way he looked at her, made her think that maybe he wasn’t after her. Maybe he got the wrong estate in the wrong city. He smiled at her as he was ushered past. And Elizabeth followed stupidly, wanting to know more about the man who broke into her room.
