Gooey Oatmeal Kisses, No More
by Paula T. (Age: 15)
copyright 09-06-2004

Age Rating: 7 to 127

"Check my bed for monsters,"
They'd command
And when you obliged...
"Check the closet," they'd demand

And when you read a story....
"Please, read it again,"
They'd beg
When they didn't get the hard words, you'd have to explain.

They littered the floor with Barbies
Tonka Trucks and more
"We'll clean up soon," they assured you
Like they'd done many times before.

They gave you gooey oatmeal kisses
And many more good night,
But nomatter how many talks about wasting electricity you gave,
They persisted on keeping on the hall light.

All those cards on your birthdays.
And many, many more.
Were put into a pile.
Named " The Gifts From Kids, Galore!"

They made you see things from a child's eyes.
And gave you the gift of a second chance
You now don't pass by everything
Without giving it another glance

You marvel at the sight of a really pretty leaf
You don't mind ridding their shirts of a grape stain
And enjoy life much, much more
Now, one of your favorite things is dancing in the rain.

But all those toys won't get picked up
And you're tired of their fights
You can't wait till the day their gone
Nothing is quite right

They leave the toilet seat up
And forget to clean up their bed
They won't do their laundry
And forget to listen to what you said

You can't wait for them to leave
You want to be by yourself
Why can't they leave you alone?
You want to be by oneself

Then you walk into their room
And decide that you were wrong
You want them to come back home
They've been away too long

Their are no more toys on the floor
The toilet seat is down
There are no more shouts of need
No more kids around

They is nobody jumping on your bed
And all the clothes are clean
The house is oddly quiet
And nobody's being cranky and mean

And you begin to miss the cards
To miss the dirty clothes
You begin to miss the kids
And especially the gooey oatmeal kisses which are no more.

OOOO, that's so sad, I almost cried.
My nieces and nefews are going to be all grown up someday, and this reminds how much I'm gonna miss it all.
Keep up the good work.

Paula,

This is a very impressive piece. Insightful, well articulated. Good flow, and a nice development curve. And you're only 11?

Right on.

So sad...and so very true!
My oldest just entered high school... and I dread the day I lose him to the life of his own, when he will be too busy for me much. :-(

But for now... I cherish every moment. Like tonight...we just got back from a demolition derby! Yeah..the kids had a great time and a couple of the contestants even gave him the flag off their car. They are so very happy tonight... my two boys. :-)

Thank you for this reminder to cherish every moment.
