The Woodland Elf
by Stephen Washam
copyright 12-07-2004

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Down beside Persimmon Creek that flows past Whistler’s Mill
There used to be a little bridge that may be standing still
It was there many years ago when I was by myself
That I first saw the tiny thing they called the woodland elf

I heard some mystic music as I crossed over the bridge
It drifted ‘cross the water from the far side of the ridge
I followed the enchanting tune far out in Harper’s Wood
And there upon a sunny rock a little creature stood

Wearing a ruffled shirt under its green and leafy suit
It danced a little jig while playing music on its flute
The tiny hat upon its head was a soft pale forest green
It was the most amazing sight that I had ever seen

I hid among the bushes and watched in awed dismay
As over by the flowing brook the creature ran to play
It sat next to the water and it watched the bubbles rise
Then blew its magic flute and made them float into the skies

As bubbles from the brook began to rise in skyward flight
The music from the flute brought forth a most amazing sight
When the bubbles flew into the air to make a quick escape
The notes of music gave each one a new and wondrous shape

Flowers, hearts, and animals soon filled the morning air
I never will forget the sights that I encountered there
Then what happened next is the thing that I had greatly feared
The tiny creature spotted me and quickly disappeared

From time to time over the years I tried as best I could
To spot the little creature I’d seen out in Harper’s Wood
I never did see it again, but once when I was there
I saw some wondrous bubbles floating up into the air

The little elfish creature must have been there closely by
A smile came upon my face as I watched the bubbles fly
So, if someday you’d like to try and look for it yourself
Then cross the bridge by Whistler’s Mill to seek the woodland elf
