Firefly
by Stephen Washam
copyright 03-30-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Softly glowing there so bright
Oh little firefly of night
Lightly floating through the trees
On the gentle summer breeze

Your light puts out a mellow glow
As through the nighttime air you go
Up against the darkened sky
I watch your flashing light go by

The sky’s a wonderland delight
As all your tiny friends take flight
And fill the air like magic lanterns
Flying about in graceful patterns

The meadows seem to come alive
With all the lights that dip and dive
Like tiny shooting stars you go
Back and forth and to and fro’

How I’d like to join you there
As you fly about within the air
Soaring high and worry free
That is where I long to be

Someday I’ll fly away with you
Across the early morning dew
‘Til then I’ll watch your glowing light
Oh little firefly of night

Very nice. I live in Florida, so we don't see fireflies. however i went to New Jersey when i was little and i do remember trying to catch fireflies during the summer.

I loved this poem!!! I miss being a kid when things used to be so easy and we could run around in vacant fields instead of seeing monstrosities called homes. Your poem shows great structure with the end rhymes and melodic stressed and unstressed syllabals. Great job!! It brought me back a lot. I can't wait to read more of your work!!

I remember catching fireflys in a jar and using them to light up our treehouse. Wonderful times that are such a distant memory, thanks for the reminder. Anthony

Almost makes you feel the warm, evening air, the quietness of the night and the enchantment of sparkling fairy lights. Very relaxing.
