  The Last Knight

After the battle was lost, I stood alone
Looking blankly at the violence I could not condone
I saw the faces of my friends, glazed with their last terror
The mournful faces of my family, having made their last error
My enemies dead before me, they did not deserve my hate
I never wanted to fight them, yet it was I who sealed their fate
Tomorrow I will return home, and they will call me brave
They will call me a hero, but I will know their praise is naïve
I will call myself a monster; death will haunt my dreams
Everyday I will relive the anger, the terror, and their screams
Look at what I’ve won, nothing but a torn and bloody field
My heart told me not to come here, but my pride would not yield
Without reason or anger I charged, I spilt their blood
I cried with every man, who I left in the mud
I fought everyone, friend and foe, until I was the last one
Their blood pooled in lakes; I was left stunned
This feud was worthless, but look at what it cost
I stood alone, after the battle was lost

This is a very well written and well thought out poem..Your understanding of the dichotomy of the hero/monster knight carries through into today's soldier and his war as much as the medieval setting you have given your knight's story. You have caught this aspect of war exactly. Excellent write.

This....was breath taking. It's so true, too...I don't know how managed to encompass this, most people don't think about that. There is no such thing as a winner in war. It's just who can kill who better. It's all as insignificant as two children fighting over the last cookie

You have summed up every war that had ever taken place. There is no glory. I know, sometimes they are necessary, like overcoming Hitler in WW2. There was justification and liberation for the world; but glory? I think not.

Very well written. Very dramatic and dynamic. Kept my attention the entire thing through. VERY hard to do lol.
