The Chosen
Chapter 15
by Natalie Amaral
copyright 09-04-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

After her interrogation with David was over, Jane sat in the room, staring into space.

It's what he showed me, David told her. He's a vampire.

The logical part of Jane's mind told her that David was being paranoid. There was no such thing as a vampire. Anybody who believed in those creatures had to be crazy.

Yet still, before Jane had questioned David, one of the officers told her that on the night he confessed to what he had done, he had acted as though he'd seen a ghost.

Jane slowly rose to her feet. It was time to hit the pavement: she needed to find out where Lucien was living. Even more so, she needed to find out if John knew more than he said he did. She didn't have any hardcore evidence about that, only suspicion.

Now, it was time to get some action done.

***

Lucien was relieved to be home. One of the reasons being was that it was almost daylight. Another reason was that he had to get away from the hospital. As selfish as that sounded, the sight of those teethmarks had set him on edge. He was only grateful that he didn't leave too long before sunrise. At least that way he knew Kaitlin wouldn't get attacked during the day.

Lucien was on the way to the basement when he heard voices in the living room. One was John's; it sounded clear even though he was speaking in a hushed but remorseful tone. The other voice was spoken over the phone--a woman's voice which Lucien sensed was familiar but could not place.

"She should be at the hospital for a while longer," John was saying. "I'm just afraid of what will happen once I'm caught."

"If you're caught," the woman's voice was saying, "I'll see to it you'll be taken care of."

"What about Jane? She's looked up to me like a father figure."

"I will make this easy on you," the woman's voice was saying. "Make sure he doesn't catch on to what we're up to, or you will die at MY hand."

The person on the other end of the line hung up before John slowly lowered the phone. When John turned around and saw Lucien standing by the doorway, his face paled.

"Traitor," Lucien hissed. "You know the real reason of Kaitlin's condition, don't you?"

John slowly shook his head. "It was the only way."

"The only way for what? To give her a painful death?" Lucien shouted.

John stared at him, aghast. "You don't know what it's like, serving to a man who never grows old or dies. I had seen my wife die at a young age, and after running into you, I was overcome with joy that I had a choice."

"THIS WAS NO CHOICE!" Lucien bellowed. "I never chose this kind of life!"

"It would be the kind of life I would have chosen!" John yelled back. "If my darling wife Sophie had this choice, do you honestly think she would be buried six feet under?"

Lucien stared at him. "Who are you working for? Who brainwashed these sick thoughts into your head? Don't tell me it wasn't anybody because I knew you for years, and you wouldn't get these sort of twisted ideas unless someone planted them in your head."

John remained silent.

Lucien stalked up to him, grabbing his neck: not to choke him, just to force him to look into his eyes. "Just a name, John. That's all I need. I know it's a woman, so don't lie to me."

John could only look into his eyes.

"Just a name."

"She said she'd kill me if I said anything."

"I'll kill you if you don't."

John sighed. "Mariam Simone. She wanted to use Kaitlin to get her revenge on you."

Lucien released his hold on John's throat, grateful to finally get the information he needed.

I should have known, Lucien thought. I should have figured it would be Mariam.

A shiver went up and down his spine as memories flooded back to haunt him.

Natalie, the tension is building and building. Very well written, I'm really enjoying this story. Another player, a female and from his past.....who felt it important to use a human to seek revenge against the main character. Such interesting twists!
