Fetus
by Lyle Berry (Age: 61)
copyright 09-06-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Quiescent…curled…floating wet salt black.
Warm... Surrounded. Peaceful beat soothes.
Synchronization. Winds sigh soft.
Motion…sea undulates ground swells.
Pounding, waves crest jar.
Bouncing riding surf…settles…
Calm again. Water bleeds to echo.
Sibilance above slows.
Gurgles, gurgles, rumbles, roars
Again sloshing, vertigo…
Ceases…reoriented…down then side
Sounds…two – high and low
Oscillating…
To rest now? No, pressure above
Weight on top, new rhythm below
Slow, then faster, faster, faster!
Rocking, shaking, squeezing, heavy…
Tummy tie tugs tight tipping…rolling
Subsidence…over.
Sounds again loud…inside and outside
Sudden gyro flip nausea
Turbulence
Pounding, waves crest jar.
Bouncing riding surf…settles…
Drum faster …winds louder
Humming…throbbing…shaking…flying
Shudders quakes subsides shudders quakes
Subsidence.
Pounding, waves crest jar.
Bouncing riding surf…settles…
Flat…to rest now?
No! no! no! Contraction, constriction, tummy tie tangled
strangling, struggling, squeezing, squeezing
Legs pull pain arms bent head squashed
Hurts! hurts! HURTS!
Free gushing squirting spurting hot wet
Cold! cold! cold!
Tummy tie burns
Upside down ouch!
Spit yolk
Choke…cough, scream!!!!
...Surface wrapped skin on skin
Bright, bright, bright! drops sting!
Face stroked
Touches
Heat envelopes
dimpled in mouth
Suckling…
Sweetness flows inside. LOVE

Well folks, thanks so much for your nice comments. Yes, this was a fun poem to write. I did my best to try to put myself inside the mind of an unborn infant and to give the baby's perspective of his experiences. Everything from waking up with mommy in the AM to the traumatic birthing experience. The "spit yolk" comes from my pre-med days when I learned that the fetus often has a "yolk plug" (not quite the same as chicken egg yolk but same concept) that must be cleared from the baby's throat to facilitate breathing. I apologize for the jerky ride, but I imagine the fetus goes for more than a few of those in his nine month gestation period. LOL!

Interesting poem. Felt choppy to me, however, I believe that is the rythmn which was meant for this poem. The rocking, pulling, squeezing...and such. What an imagination. spit yolk? had to really smile and shake my head over that stanza. what an image came to my mind **g** Good write!
