The World Band

I dreamed of Drums in Africa
With deep compelling sounds,
Which resonated through the air;
To Australia they were bound.

They joined up with the Didgeridoo;
A duet had just been formed,
The sound floated off to the Orient,
And an orchestra was born.

The Sheng and Pipa joined the group,
So did the Gao-Hu,
An international sound was made,
To play for me and you.

An Indian Sitar then was found
In the great Sub-Continent,
A Chenda also wanted in,
And to Europe they soon went.

It was like a musical buffet there,
With so many old traditions,
With a Tuba, Trumpet and Bagpipes,
They were finally world musicians.

But wait, here comes the Middle-East
With the Santoor and the 'Ud,
Their orchestra is almost done
And they're getting in the mood.

And finally to America
For a Banjo and a Fiddle,
The orchestra had come full round,
And the world was in the middle.

They played the songs of love and peace
And truth and toleration,
To show the world that they were one,
And make a demonstration.

Then I awoke and looked around,
And all was still the same,
The world was still a dangerous place,
With each one pointing blame.

Now oft' I long to dream again
And hear the World Band,
And pray that when I finally wake,
We're living hand in hand.

Great work Mr.Pekrul! I figured I should start with these poems, than go on to your books to divine the poems. And I've been getting hyper about hitting 100 poems next submission...XD Anyway, I really enjoyed this piece how you compared everything to music. I myself like Japanese music. American music...is really down the crapper. The rap should be locked in an ancient tomb never to be opened again, the pop is nauseating, some of the rock is okay and the classical is dying out! Come back here classical! Japanese music is of higher quality, a few singers I like are Hikaru Utada, Maaya Sakamoto, Gackt Cumai...and more. Anyway, your poem had a nice rhyme and flow to it. I also liked how you gave the ending an unexpected finale. Good work, keep writing!

What a wonderful world it would be if all your sentiments came true. This poem has a hypnotic quality for me. It holds me glued to the page to see what's coming next.

And of course, I'm always envious of your perfect rhythm and rhyme.

Long may you live! Long may you write!

Your friend,

Rich

REading through asecond time made my heart skip a beat and my breath stop.

I have never read anything this profoundly beautiful.

Thank you so much for sharing this, and congratulations on winning the contest. You far exceeded anything I'd ever expected to get.

David you have excelled yourself. This is not only a good poem, it is a wonderful idea.
IF ONLY!
Imagine, no war, just duelling instruments. They who play best win, with no penalties for the losers.
Will makind ever reach this happy state, somehow I doubt it.
Well done, Brian

Utterly astonishing. I hope one day something like this is made, as music truely could be the thing to unite the world. This...left me breathless. Your rythm and form were wonderful, and flowed as if it itself were a song

The orchestra had come full round,
And the world was in the middle.

They played the songs of love and peace
And truth and toleration,

These are my favorite lines! (Especially the first two I copied here for it's almost as if the music was hugging the world... what a wonderful mental picture you have painted.) Thank you for sharing it!
