The Chosen
Chapter 16
by Natalie Amaral
copyright 09-07-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Paris, France
1562

So many events were going on at this time period in the country of France. The first religious war was provoked by the Massacre at Vassey, the Catholics appeared to be winning, and Admiral de Colig withdrew the Protestand forces to Orleans, which was then besieged. So many French troops were up in arms by all that was going on.

At the moment, that was of no concern to Lucien Cheneaux. For days, he had lain bed-ridden. He had been too sick and weak to move. Several doctors who had seen him concluded that it was due to some strange and terrible illness. All they knew was that he had mysteriously lost an enormous amount of blood. The doctors were completely baffled about his condition. They knew so little about it that there was little they can do.

November 15, 1562, Lucien Cheneaux had died at the age of 21. At least, that’s what everyone thought.

***

After being unconscious for a great deal of time, Lucien rose from his bed. He was feeling much stronger and energized than he had in a long time. Yet he had an intense, strange thirst building up in his throat and it raged through his body. It was a strange kind of thirst—one unlike he had never felt before.

Lucien.

The soft, feminine voice called out to him. He didn’t know where he was, but it repulsed him when he realized he had awakened from a stone bed. It then registered in his brain that he was in a tomb.

A tomb, he thought. That would mean I’m in a cemetery! I have been buried alive!

Come to me.

The voice had called out to him again. It sounded soft and seductive, yet almost urging. Whoever it was that was calling him surely wanted to see him now. Lucien didn’t know why. At the moment, he didn’t care as long as he was out of this horrific place.

He turned to his right and saw a stairway, which led upwards. Up at the top of the stairs, he saw a trap door. His vision seemed so much improved . . . but his craving was getting worse by the minute.

Yes, you’re getting closer, the woman’s voice was saying. Come to me, and you’ll get what you desire.

Lucien walked hurriedly ran up the stairs. When he got to the trap door, however, it was locked.
Don’t let such a tiny obstacle stop you! Break it apart!

Lucien stared at the cement trap door for a moment, wondering how he could break it apart. Forcing the thought from his mind, he grabbed the lock and pulled hard enough for it to come off its hinges. It was then that Lucien pushed at the trap door until it gave away. He was relieved to find himself greeted by the starlit, night sky as the air brushed against his skin. He was also startled, however, at the sight of the woman that stood at his opened grave.

The woman appeared to be beautiful; she was pale-skinned with deep, red lips, and bright, green eyes. She had a lovely, voluptuous shape that Lucien found to be tantalizing.

Yet there was something about this woman that bothered him. Even when she smiled down at him proudly, she sent chills through his body.

“Who are you?” he demanded. “Why was I buried here?”

“Lucien,” the woman said in a seductive tone.

Lucien stared up at her. How could she have known his name?

The strange smile never left her face. “I have something that will ease that parched dryness in your throat.”

With that, she held out a bottle in her hands. Lucien was able to smell the liquid, but couldn’t make out what it was. He didn’t care. All he cared about was getting his hands on it to ease his thirst.

He grabbed the bottle from her hands as she laughed while he brought it to his lips. He guzzled down the sweet, precious liquid as he felt it ease his dehydration from every fiber of his being. He didn’t care what it was or where it came from. Once he was done and wiped his lips, however, he realized what it was he drank. He quickly dropped the bottle in repulsion as he looked at the woman. “What have I done?”

She smiled, revealing sharp, long, pointy fangs. “You did what anyone in your situation would normally have done. Do you know what was happening to you while you were so ill for all those days?”

Lucien shook his head, but he knew what her answer was.

“You were undergoing a unique and remarkable transformation, Lucien. You’re one of the Chosen. You’re a vampire. Welcome to your new life.”

“NO!” Lucien shouted with horror. “NOOOOO!”

Couldn't take the time to stop and comment as I caught up on your chapters--too anxious to see what twist you tossed in next. This chapter was particularly well done; it moved along nicely.

Great background and well written. Actual historical facts mixed in with the beginnings of Lucien's life as a vampire. Well done!!
