The Chosen
Chapter 17
by Natalie Amaral
copyright 09-09-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

To him, she was known as Mariam Simone. She went by many other aliases to her victims, but to him, that was the name she went by. Even if he had known her as a human, she would have struck him as the most terrifying monster he ever met. It was amazing how she could be so charming to the victims she lured in before she fed on them. Although she was all beauty by appearance, on the inside, she was nothing more than a demonic beast.

Lucien couldn't bring himself to kill innocent humans, no matter how great his thirst became. He survived by feeding on several kinds of animals. It worked, but his actions apparently repulsed Mariam.

"You'll never know the true pleasure of a real meal," Mariam often told him, "unless you experience it yourself."

The look in her eyes were enough to frighten Lucien into realizing that she meant those words. Finally, one night, she had decided to force him to have such an experience.

She had seen him feed from a rat. For her, that had been a breaking point. She had literally plucked the creature from his hands before grabbing him and throwing him into a dungeon.

"You will stay here until I feel you deserve a decent enough meal," Mariam bellowed, her voice echoing from the walls.

Days had turned into weeks as Lucien had gone without feeding. It wasn't long before Lucien felt the thirst overcome him. The stronger it became, the more it raged. The more it raged, the more painful it was.

The door to his dungeon finally opened. With that, a familiar scent reached his nostrils; that's when a strong sense of fear filled his heart. It was the smell of human, living blood.

Mariam stood at the doorway, a devilish grin on her face. "Good evening, Lucien. Ah, yes, I know what it is you hunger for. I have just what you need." She then tossed a young boy into the room, causing him to collapse onto the floor.

Lucien stared at the young boy and realized he was a homeless person. The more he gazed at the youth, the stronger his thirst grew. He was able to smell the blood that flowed through his veins.

"Yes, Lucien," Mariam hissed. "He's your first real meal since your change. Go on; satisfy that blood thirst which has been driving you man all these weeks."

Lucien found himself stepping closer and closer to the youth. As he did, his thirst grew stronger . . . stronger. . .

"Yes, that's it," Mariam urged. "Quench that unbearable thirst."

Lucien had cornered the youth until he was standing right next to him. Lucien moved closer as the boy started cringing in fear.

Lucien then shook his head, repulsed at his temptation. "NO!" he shouted, turning away. "NOOO!"

With that, he grabbed a thick, sturdy stick close by and shoved it into Mariam's heart.

"Die!" Lucien hollared. "Die!"

Mariam screamed in pain as she had disappeared into a cloud of mist. Lucien frowned. She was supposed to disintegrate into dust. What happened?

The youth then rose to his feet. "Sir," he said in a shaky voice.

Lucien turned to the boy but kept his distance. "Leave. If you value your life, go away away, and never look back."

The youth nodded and quickly ran away.

Lucien left the dungeon and fed on every small creature, including insects, he could find until he got his strength back. He never knew where Mariam was; he doubted if she was in the castle.

He was only grateful to be able to escape with worrying about getting caught.

Hmmm..she is one cold hearted vampire although I supposed in the world of vampires, it is Lucien who is not behaving in a manner that would make those undead proud. Now she is back. Wonder what will happen next! Building into an excellent story!
