  Underground Railroad

Working for the Master,
A daily drudgery,
Working for the Master,
In all his finery.

I didn't ask to come here,
But on the ship I went,
Just one of many others
To America was sent.

They had us picking cotton
And doing their laundry,
When all we really wanted
Was just to be set free.

I heard about a railroad
That travels underground,
They say it has conductors,
And goes from town to town.

So late at night I ran away
And searched both night and day,
To find this magic railroad
That would take me far away.

Then there it was in front of me,
And so I struggled forth,
And found it took me to a land
That was away up north.

I found myself in Canada,
Where arctic winds do blast,
I made this Canada my own,
For I was free at last.

Well written on a very emotive subject.
Anthony is right, slavery still exists, and I don't mean just government style.
It is still rife on the African continent, as it was before the white man took part.
The history of slaving is of people, any colour, any creed, selling their brothers and sisters.
I doubt it will ever go away.

The UK may have been the country where abolition started, but it was also a country where many made millions from it.
Liverpool was a well know port for transshipping slaves.
Nicely stated David.

There will always be slavery in one form or another. We work to pay the government, that writes laws to imprison us. They do what they have to to get reelected instead of what is right and we pay them to do it! Slavery is a terrible thing in any form! Anthony

I really do like this poem...it has a nice rythm, and a good topic...I really do think the world should adopt a more Canada like out look...just lay back, relax, and stay out of it. :) Great job.

This is one of the reasons why I ilke being Canadian. Although they were still treated as second class citizens in Canada at the time, at least they were free-well freeish.
Slavery is one of the greatest evils of humanity. Luckily society has seen the light and no longer uses slaves, although from what I hear there is still slavery in America-Chinese immigrants paying huge fees to be shipped to the US, then they have to work in sweat shops the rest of their lives to pay for it.
However, I have great faith in humanity, that one day everyone will be truly free. Every time there is an injustice, whether it be slavery or whether it be our own governments taking away our rights, it cheapens us as a people.
One of my favorite sayings is...'All it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.'
