God's Paradox
by Andrew Findlay (Age: 37)
copyright 06-25-2005

Age Rating: 16 to 127

Hi, my name is Andrew, and I am a Christian.
My intent here is not to be blasphemous. I am just introducing a classic paradox which I find very interesting. I have age rated this 16+ simply because I don't want to confuse any of our younger readers about God. OK then, here we go...

God is all powerful.
God can do anything.
WRONG!
Here is something he cannot do.

The paradox goes something like this...
If God, being all powerful, can do anything, he should be able to create a rock that is so hard that even he himself could never break it.
At this point some poeple might respond with, 'yes, he could, because he can do anything.'
But, if he can create such a rock, then he is not all powerful because he can't destroy his own rock that he made to be unbreakable.
At this point some will say, 'Well, since He can do anything, then he COULD destroy the rock if he so chose.'
But if he could destroy the rock which he created, then he failed his first task in creating a rock that even he could not break!
Therefore, God must fail one of the two tasks, either creating the unbreakable rock, or in breaking the rock he created. Either way, God is proven to NOT be all powerful.

Again, this is not to be blasphemous, but is just presented as an interesting paradox. I hope you really understand this little story and really think about it and what it implies.
Please feel free to add a comment to this if you want to. Sometimes when I ask this question in chat rooms, the only responses I get are with obscure bible references...trust me, there are no references anywhere that can solve this paradox.
Perhaps humanity is not yet evolved enough to understand God and his mysteries, or perhaps we have evolved beyond the need for God. Only time will tell.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's struggled to make this point. I find the "God can do anything because he's God" mindset incredibly immature, and I've had to deal with it more than once. It's infuriating trying to talk to someone like that. May as well be talking to a post. It's not like your deity of choice is gonna come down and slap you on the wrist for going "Huh?" once in a while.

Your metaphor's better than mine. It's simpler and easier to follow. I always go out of my way to explain things.
