The story behind," A New Way To Say"
by Anthony Lane Stahlhut (Age: 49)
copyright 01-10-2005

Age Rating: 7 to 127

  The story behind,

Alot of years ago, when I was still in high school. I had what I thought was the love of my life. There was no way in the world I would ever be able to live without her. The love grew to heights that I thought were unattainable. Each day I would awake and call her to profess my love. We would say I love you, hundreds of times a day.
One day when we were at school and we were in the lunch room and she was talking to her friends. I came up and told her, "I love you!" and she turned and said, "I love you, too!" and quickly returned to her friends and thier conversations. Although I know that the statement was heartfelt, the sparkle wasn't there and I started to think about it.
I remembered the first time that we had conveyed our feelings to one another. The sparkle in her eyes and the passion that we had at that moment. I thought about how her words at that time, had brought me to tears and she had cried, too! The goosebumps rise on my arms as I write this now, just remembering that moment.
Young love unencumbered by the stress of life. It was a story that was like a fantasy. I thought things couldn't get better and yet on that day in the lunch room, the sparkle was not there.
I thought about how would I get that feeling back. It was the love of my life and the feelings could not be fading. I had to find," A New Way To Say" those words, I love you, to bring back the feelings, the look and the sparkle that was there on that first time.
It took a while for me to get the idea for the poem and the answer to the question. Well at least one of the answers, for there are many that poets write about. I hope you enjoy my poem, "A New Way To Say"
I will have it on the site soon! The love has faded many years ago, the poem will last forever. That feeling of first time love will never be exactly the same. I assure you, love will come and go sometimes, but you can't hold back. Remember to have loved and lost....you know the rest! Thanks for reading, Anthony

Beautiful story.. I can't wait to read the poem. I had to come here first and read 'the story behind the story'...
One of the things I like most about pnp is not only reading the works, and they are great.. I have my favorites, and you're one.. but the comments are well worth the reading as well.
I also like this 'feature' feature. I see that this was written some time ago..
My heart longs for that kind of love. I'm sure I have had it, and have it now, but the 'mushy' parts are different now. My husbands pet names for me are Granny, Big Mama, etc.. you get the picture. But isn't holding hands a wonderful thing too?
Great stuff, Anthony. I'll go read the poem now..

This brought back a few memories.
I vaguely remember my first love. I must have been about twelve. She was my all; around whom my world revolved.
Now I can not even recall her name.
But even so, I think first love is special.
Nicely put.
Brian

With a smile and a warm feeling in my heart i write this as you have made me think of my first love and perhaps even inspired me to also write a declaration of remeberance to my first love who was a morman boy 2 years my senior who played sqush and sold hot dogs at the foot ball .
I was so in love with him and thought the world of him.
Thankyou.

*sigh* I know EXACTLY what you mean! And do you know how many times I have held back and NOT said "it" just so when I did it wouldn't be something stale.

I remember one night at a park, standing in the rain soaking wet, held tight by someone I 'loved' and looking deep into each other's eyes. We stared so long, silent, hearing only the gentle rain drops on the pavement and an occasional car drive by (it was like 1AM). We were searching the depths of each other's hearts trying to find the answer to the age old questions, 'do they love me?' and yet neither one of us would say it. When I looked down at his lips...they were quivering. I looked at his eyes and more than the rain was falling. I knew it, I knew he loved me. I could feel he was going to say it. My heart raced. My eyes teared up as well. I swallowed hard (for surely his first profession of love would be followed with a kiss just as heartfelt). I felt faint. I felt like I was floating. I waited.... and ..... waited. Yet he never said 'it' and neither did I. I would wait another two months (which seemed like an eternity) before he finally told me. How did I respond? You'd think I'd find SOMETHING romantic to say, something to sweep him off his feet, something to complete the moment, to match it. Nope! My lips let fly, "I KNEW IT! That day at the park, you were going to say it, weren't you?" Yeah, not the classiest reply. But I was right. He admitted that he did want to tell me then. He said he had to literally bit his tongue to keep from saying it. He said that so many people say it so often, he wanted me to KNOW he loved me, not just hear it. I told him, 'I know' and then we held each other for what seemed forever. Too bad forever isn't really that long, eh? *soft reminiscent smile*
