Beer Goggles

"Come on, it'll be fun." I pulled my head out from beneath my blanket and listened to Ryan's voice through my machine. "Dude, I know you're there." Silence.

"I'll treat you to a few beers..." his voice crooned, trying to coax me into picking up the phone. I sighed and rolled over, grabbing my cordless.

"What do you want man?"

"I knew the beers would make you pick up."

"Sure, whatever." I stared up at the white ceiling, trying to find a dark spot on its pristine surface. Wow, there wasn't even a spot on the ceiling for me to stare at.

"You there?" Ryan said, a slight tone of convern in his voice.

"Yeah, I'm here." 'Like always,' I added silently, looking around my bare walls.

"Man, I know you. You're probably lying in bed still, even though it's 7 at night, staring at your walls."

"Am not."

"Are so, and there's not even anything on them."

"Shut up!"

"That's why I'm taking you out," he replied. I could almost here his grin. "My boss wants me to go to some up-to-do party to promote all these new models the magazine is using, and you are coming with me."

"No, I'm not."

"Yes, you are. You're in a rut."

My eyebrows furrowed. "I am not in a rut."

"When's the last time you got laid?"

Silence.

"What time and where?"

I sighed heavily and studied my atmosphere. It was a swanky little bar that the yuppies usually occupied, not really my kind of scene, but it was crawling with models. It was sort of surreal, like being in a magazine, watching all these absolutely perfect women sashaying around the room and having light conversation.

Suddenly, I felt very nervous.

I walked over to the counter and ordered a shot, sliding onto the stool. Maybe a few drinks would help me loosen up a bit, be less nervous.

Two hours later, I stumbled away from the bar and made my way into the room, ready to work my magic. I looked around. Most of them were surrounded by groups of men, all losers, who circled around them like sharks looking for prey. Finally, I noticed one really hot girl in the corner, hiding from the crowd.

Slyly, I made my way over to her. She was wearing a red cocktail dress, which matched her dark, black hair and pale skin perfectly, and I felt my blood boil with anticipation. I ran my fingers through my hair, took a deep breath, and put on a big smile.

"Hey, hiding out from all the men?" The girl didn't move or say anything, in fact, she acted like she didn't even notice my presence. "My name's Scott, what's yours?" Still there was no response.

We stood there like that for a couple minutes, just looking at the crowd of people. Not a man to be defeated so easily, I decided that I would have to carry the conversation. Despite her striking beauty, she was probably shy, maybe new to the whole modeling scene.

"I know how you feel, I'm not really used to being surrounded by people like this either," I laughed, "in fact usually I just stay at home and hide under my covers." I had expected a laugh, or some sort of catty remark, but she remained silent. Hmmm, maybe she liked these kinds of qualities in a guy. Maybe she wanted a "sensitive" dude. "I often cry." Still, no scathing answer. "Do you want to get out of here?" I moved to put my arm around her waist, when I felt someone tap me on the shoulder.

I turned around to see Ryan, with a rather amused expression on his face. "What man?" I whispered, annoyed, "I'm trying to pick up a chick and you're throwing off my game."

"Um, yeah, about that..." He turned me back around to face the girl. "Take a closer look at her."

I looked at her closely, taking in her perfectly curved lips, supple breasts, long legs, and tiny waist. Then, I looked into her eyes, the perfect shade of green, and noticed that they looked kind of glazed over and glassy. I was confused, what the hell was going on? Then I looked even closer and, through the alcohol-gilded haze, realization dawned on me.

For the past hour, I had been hitting on a mannequin.

Hahahahaha! I should have read this sooner! Since landing in Statesboro, GA, home of Georgia Southern University, I have seen my share of bars and their drunken denizens. This brings back memories of days gone by... memories of keg stands, bonfires, a guy trying to take on a muscular bar bouncer nicknamed "SWAT", and a girl I know falling down on the dance floor so often I had to literally pick her up. Good times... anyway, the title lured me here to see what manner of antics I could read about. And I must say this is quite amusing.

Hitting on a mannequin, eh? Wow... that must have been an embarrassing revelation the next morning. Does your friend still bring it up, or was he so intoxicated that he forgot about it? Since I hardly drink myself, I do not have any tales to offer in return. Perhaps it is for the best... I have never been drunk before, so I do not know how I will behave. Again, perhaps it is best that I never find out.

Thanks for this tale of a combination of loneliness and too much alcohol turning into a humorous adventure in hitting on inanimate human-shaped objects. It made me smile to think about the days of old when I was a designated driver for my first roommate (before a nasty falling out) and the experiences of bar-hopping with him and some friends of his. I have quite a few tales concerning their antics, but that is for another time. Good work Victoria!

Oh man, good times with alcohol. We can all take a lesson from this... be wary of silent strangers if you're under the influence! Could have been worse, it could have been a lamp... excellent piece! Keep up the good work. ^_^
