Demise of a Marriage
by Elizabeth Thompson (Age: 56)
copyright 01-30-2005

Age Rating: 13 to 127

How did we go from lovers to veiled enemies,
When did tenderness fade away?
And can you say why there are only memories
To tell the story of our day to day?

I gave you my all; my heart and soul
But in your eyes no more than chattel
My heart bled tears, no longer whole
So memories now must tell the tale.

I knew that you still loved me;
They were the sober moments in time.
When the anger faded quietly
Then once again, you called me "Mine.”

But alcohol and anger create a deeper mist
That even love could not reach through
Physical strength and clenched fist
Caused so much harm to me and you.

I came away with bruises
On my body, in my soul
You never acknowledged the abuses
So how could we make it whole?

You remain the same as ere I left you
But I now live a loving life.
I regret for you your painful dues
But not the severing of man and wife.

I pray that you will find your peace
At whatever age it comes
And in your peace, you find release
To rise above and not succumb.

For all that was and cannot be
I do not wish you ire
I wish you peace and happiness
To be again the man that I admired.
