Dreamboat
by Betty Eskdale (Age: 63)
copyright 09-11-2001

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Is it fate that we meet that Special Someone, could it be pre-ordained?

My girlfriend’s brother’s picture sat upon their old t.v.
The guy was quite a dreamboat, as anyone could see.
I dreamed a bit about him, and how I hope we’d meet,
When he returned from Germany, and he'd sweep me off my feet.

But when the special day arrived that he was homeward bound
My heart was claimed by someone else, and we were altar-bound,
I didn’t want to meet this guy that I had once dreamed of
Because I thought I’d found the one that I would truly love.

My girlfriend, all excited, called to say Ken had returned
And asked if I’d go out with him but Army guys I spurned;
A cup of tea, his parents there, and her to chaperone
Knowing he was an army guy, we couldn't be alone....

He said that he'd be glad to meet on Sunday afternoon
He was looking forward to our date, just could we have it soon?
I was shocked that he'd agree and so we planned our date
He rang the bell at our back door, not early and not late;

Insisting that he meet my folks he really pleased my mother
We were quite impressed by now, by Roberta's older brother
We almost didn't get to leave, he charmed my family so
But finally, I gave him the signal, it was time to go

His manners were impeccable, he dressed so clean and neat,
Seeing him in real life just knocked me off my feet,
Out to his car, which shone with care, he opened up the door,
Made sure that I was comfortable, I sure felt so cared for.

So, off we went to his sister's place to have a cup of tea
He was considerate and sweet, just anything for me.
The visit went just fine, because we all felt quite at home
We talked and laughed, I soon forgot I hadn't always known him

Afterward he took me home. Mom took one look at me
"You’d better write a Dear John note, it's plain as it can be"
Because he hadn’t kissed me yet, or even held my hand
I didn’t know my fate was sealed, my future all was planned;

But mothers have an instinct and mine was right that day
Before I had a clue that I even felt that way...
A certain glow is cast by love, it must have been on me
From a Sunday afternoon with Ken, at his sister’s house for tea.

Aww... how sweet! :) I know the feeling of meeting that special someone. It's fantastic!!

Well, Betty, a little poetic license there, eh? Remember the "yellow submarine" and telling Ken (on the second date I believe: "Now don't eat too much and embarrass me", when he came to dinner?) I remember when Ken'd put the sub in "supersneak" and polish up his high velocity hubcaps! What a fright for a second date...the whole famdambly! Ken is a brave man to have walked into the viper pit, survived the Eastveld scrutiny and still came back. We love him, too, big sis! Buns

Thank you, Betty. My husband is quite a character, he tries to be gruff, but he doesn't fool anyone who knows him, my mother used to call him "Growly Bear"

Thank you Sunny and David, you can't imagine how much your wonderful remarks mean to me, I have chills running down my spine, it is an honour to think that you are so moved!

Thank you, Robert, that sounds like a great idea! I'm glad you like it. P.S. Every Ken I ever met was a brat, I didn't want to ever date a Ken...strange how life turns out, isn't it?

Thank you for the lovely comments. Yes, we have been married now for 34 years, and I am grateful that we seem to be growing closer....Dear John found someone else who suited him better too...

Nice going, Betty! This is a very loving tribute to your hubby (or, at least,I HOPE he's your hubby, heehee). Thanks for the lift.
