My Father ( A Tribute )
by David Pekrul
copyright 02-04-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

He was always there,
and often I took him for granted.
He gave us a roof over our heads,
and a vegetable garden the size of a swimming pool.
He never asked for much in return,
except on Saturday's
when I was expected to help him around the yard.
I hated it…..
He always said that I was the only one
who would stay with him for the whole day
while he worked in the yard….but I hated it.

When he said I was "asking for a spanking",
he was right.
I deserved it every time,
and it did me good.
I know now what he meant
when he said "This will hurt me more that it hurts you."
Even when I was being punished,
I could feel his love.

He's gone now and I miss him terribly.
If I could just spend a Saturday
helping him in the yard,
I know I wouldn't hate it so much.

Isn't it a wonder that those of us who were "spanked" (not beat, mind you) love our parents dearly and are for the most part ... law abiding citizens. (unlike those results of the "Dr. Spock" era... eh?)

I, too, wrote a tribute to my mother in a poem called WILLLING WILLOW at http://www.prose-n-poetry.com/display_work/728

I'd really like to know what you think of it.
