  Bewitched

Bewitched was a sit-com that came out in the early 1960's (yes I was there). Elizabeth Montgomery starred as a witch that met and fell in love with a mortal man. The show was about their lives together and the dealings with parents, relatives, friends, business associates and children. When Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) met Darrin (Dick York 1964-69 and Dick Sargent 1969-72, Dick York became ill and had to be replaced) they fell in love at first sight. They decided to get married. Sam told Darrin that she was a witch and he said that she would have to live a regular mortal life if they were to be together. They had problems with Sam's family of witches and warlocks, whom wanted Sam to continue to be a witch. Even though Darrin wanted her to not use those same powers.
Agnes Morehead played Sam's mother Endora and in true mother-in-law fashion, she hated Darrin. Sam's father Maurice (Maurice Evans) had the same contempt for Darrin and the two of them did all they could to break up the marriage. Other relatives also engaged in the attempt to break them up. Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) was old and forgetful and sometimes would try to cast spells, but would forget the exact spell. Many times an animal would appear instead of what she wanted. Uncle Arthur (Paul Lynde) was a warlock and he would appear from time to time to cause Darrin problems. Dr. Bombay (Bernard Fox) was a witch doctor and would be called in to help when one of the witches was ill. Esmeralda (Alice Ghostley) was on the show to help Sam after the birth of their second child Adam. Endora said Darrin was to cheep to get Sam help so she called Esmeralda. Esmeralda had allergies and would sneeze and cast spells on accident. When she lost confidence she would literally fade from sight.
There were neighbors Gladys and Abner Kravitz. Gladys would see Sam cast a spell and tell her husband about it. He would tell her that there was no such thing as a witch. Gladys always was trying to get proof, but never did. Darrin's Boss, Larry Tate (David White) was in a lot of the shows and his wife, Louise (Irene Vernan and later Kasey Rogers) ,too!
There were two children, Tabatha and Adam. Tabatha was played by five different people (Cynthia Black, Twins Heidi and Laura Gentry, and Twins Julie and Tamar Young) and Adam was played by two twin brothers (Greg and David Lawerence). Elizabeth Montgomery also played Sam's twin cousin Serena in a few shows.
When the show was written it was called The Witch of Westport. When it was written for TV they called it The Witch of Westwood and finally when it went on the air it was called Bewitched. First showed in Black and white (64-66) and later it was shown in color (66-72) I remember wishing I too had special powers as I watched this wonderful comedy. The show showed us that you can be different and still be in love. We can deal with friends and relatives and any life situation if we stick together.

:( You forgot about Diane and Erin Murphy, who played the toddler Tabitha. They had the blonde curly hair. This was one of my favorite shows when I was younger. I had that 'twitch of the nose' down-pat, but it never seemed to work for me. I often dreamed of having those witchly powers. I thought Elizabeth Montgomery was great!

Just one error I spotted:
"Elizabeth Montgomery stared (starred) as a witch"
Thanks for the memories!

I love being able to see this show on Nick at Nite, and if I got the Nick at Nite 24 hours channel, I would probably watch more. Thanks for the read through! Take care and keep it up. ^_^

I also enjoyed this show the first time around. You have decribed it well.

I have also learned details that I never knew, thank you.

Great summery of a terrific TV show, I've watched over the years, and now on re-runs on cable. My favorite relative of Sam was Aunt Clara (who also appeared in The Graduate - on the wedding line in the hotel greeting Dustin Hoffman). Aunt Clara reminded me of my own Aunt Lena, unmarried, and loved by everyone in the family. This is a wonderful synopsis of the series. Thanks for the memories, Anthony.
