It Was Just A Ship

  It Was Just A Ship

It was just a ship upon the sea,
Now what did that have to do with me?
A ship with a hundred souls on board,
A ship brought down by a mangy hoard.

The year was 1858,
When it was attacked going through a strait,
With rocks on both sides; no way to escape,
In that fateful year, 1858.

On it’s maiden voyage, new worlds to explore,
With husbands and wives and children aboard,
It was bound for New York, the American Dream,
It drifted off-course, no more to be seen.

It was just a ship upon the sea,
Now what did that have to do with me?
A ship with a hundred souls on board,
A ship gone down, all killed by the sword.

The Pirate appeared from out of nowhere,
He boarded the ship and started to swear,
“Ye dastardly devils, this ship is mine,
Now bring me some food and a bottle of wine.”

His shipmates boarded and looted the rest,
Stealing gold and silver for their treasure chest,
And taking the women while men walked the plank,
Then killing the Captain, a man of great rank.

The ship was scuttled and broken apart,
The pirates were ruthless; no conscience or heart,
And all those on board finally knew what it meant,
To the depths of the ocean the ship was sent.

It was just a ship upon the sea,
Now what did that have to do with me?
As the spirits of victims cried out to be free,
Cursed the Pirate that killed them;......that Pirate was me.

Wow, that last line stumped me! I am awed at this poem. How can you keep the rhymes like that?I can never keep the rhymes in line, and if I do, it sounds forced and just doesn't work.

Great write! And cut the coffee, and start on the Pepsi! Pepsi RULES!

Maniacally Yours, Mehrina! (=^-^=)

What a beautiful piece! I really enjoyed reading this. I generally like your work, but this has got to be my favorite so far! Thanks so much for sharing this, truly a great write.

LOL... you're right, I did enjoy this. :-) And if caffeine is your vice, chocolate's mine! :-) Bring me some more, some Godiva and wine! :-)

This is purely a work of fiction. The date has no bearing on anything. The work is the product of an overactive imagination, probably brought on by too much caffine. (I've got to cut back on the coffee!)

David Pekrul

I'm not sure how to respond to this yet. Its clearly well written with nice meter and aabb structure. I may not be good at history, but I assume you are referring to a real event since you mention the date of 1858; but since you say the "pirate was me," does the ship or the event depicted refer to someting more symbolic or metahorical? I'll keep mulling it over.

Ah yes, because the pen is mightier than the sword. The writer choses the path and with the stroke of a pen, what was ...is not! Thanks, Anthony
