Just Being Me
by David Pekrul
copyright 03-13-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

It's my personal behaviour
That people talk about,
Some say that I am just a lush,
Some say that I’m a lout.

But they don’t really know me,
If they did they wouldn’t judge,
‘Cause this is just the way I am,
I’m never going to budge.

I didn’t used to be like this,
I was a man of vision,
But then I lost the life I had,
Which wasn’t my decision.

It happened very late at night,
While working on the job,
Some punk with nothing else to do,
Had come inside to rob.

I didn’t want to do it,
But I have a son and wife,
I didn’t want to die, and so
I took the robber’s life.

And now I live in torment,
And the pain, it comes and goes,
I put a smile upon my face,
So no one really knows.

It’s just this damn behaviour
That is getting in my way,
I really do not like it, but
I’m drunk most every day.

So please don’t judge the man you see,
This wasn’t my first choice,
Be glad that you are not like me,
In that you can rejoice.

I meant to come and read this after you commented on my story "Robbed." I'm sorry it took me so long to get here, but after reading this, I'm very glad to have made it. It really makes you think about why a person is in the state they are. If this were the reason for someone being an alcoholic, it would make you look at the situation a little differently, maybe with pity instead of just disgust. This is really a sad poem, and very well written. Thank you for pointing me in this direction. :)

this is a nice read. not laid back coz it makes u think, but nice.
a very simple way to show guilt so very proud, yet so sad.

I'm glad this is not you and what a great imagination. This is a great poem. Good job, Anthony

Hi everyone,
Just so you know, this is just another piece of fiction about someone with a tragic life. The person in the poem is not meant to represent anyone living or dead.

Regards,
David Pekrul
