Lucien looked up and saw John’s reflection in the mirror. When he saw what John was about to do, Lucien quickly turned around and grabbed his hand—the one which held a large, thick wooden stake.
“Traitorous bastard!” Lucien hissed, grabbing the stake and tossing it at the other end of the room. “Once you’ve done your deed, don’t you think she’ll destroy you?”
“She promised me eternal life!”
“She’s the type to break such a promise!” With that, Lucien punched John in the face—hard enough to render him unconscious.
Lucien stared at John and shook his head helplessly, wondering how John could have been so easily decieved.

Jane unfolded her cell-phone. “Hello?”
“I’ve become aware that you’re suspicious of John and I being associated with on another. Yes?”
“How did you get this number?” Jane recognized Lucien’s voice.
“From John.”
“Alright. Yes, I am suspicious. Are you willing to admit up to that now?”
“Yes. There are also plenty of things he wishes to admit to you—in person.”
“Is this regarding Kaitlin?”
“That and so much more.”
Jane took a napkin. “Alright. Give me your addres.”
Lucien did so.
“Good. Lucien, you’d better not be messing with me.”
“I wouldn’t be calling you if I were.” With that, he slammed down the receiver.
Jane stared at the phone as she slowly folded it, thinking, Do I have a choice?
She then stared at Kaitlin who was sleeping peacefully. Jane was startled when she walked in earlier; Kaitlin appeared to be much paler than before. The doctor wouldn’t tell her anything at first, but when Jane told her who she was, the doctor told her that Kaitlin might be suffering from a unique case of anemia.
Jane looked out the window, knowing it would be another hot day out. She turned to Kaitlin and wandered if she’ll be safe here.
She turned and left, walking out of the room, making a silent promise to Kaitlin that she would be back.

Lucien watched as John awoke from his cataleptic stupor. When John realized he couldn’t move from his sitting position, he looked up at Lucien. “What the bloody hell have you done to me?”
“Don’t worry—I didn’t harm you anymore than necessary. I only tied you up in case you tried anything foolish again.”
“Untie me this instant!”
“Why? So you can attempt to kill me again?”
“I’m only doing what Mariam demands of me!”
“Ah, yes! Once that’s all done, she will kill you.”
“She’ll make me immortal.”
Lucien stared at him. “You have been my servant for years, and I never once thought you were this gullible. But I never once thought you would betray me, either.”
“You never promised me the dark gift. All I had to do was give Mariam the girl, and I’ll live forever. Not to mention the fact I would no longer have to answer to you.”
Lucien then glared at him, revealing his red eyes and fangs. “Is this what you want? Is this the kind of creature you wish to be, you sick, delusional idiot?”
John merely smirked at him.
Lucien then looked up as he heard a car pull up. “Good. I was expecting company.” John held up a tiny microcassette player. “Perfect timing, too. Don’t go anywhere.”
John stared at Lucien, his jaw dropping.

“Okay, I’m here,” Jane said, brushing past Lucien as she walked into the house. “What do you want?”
Lucien gave her a tiny microcassette player. “I had just found out that John did something illegal. The proof is on that tape.”
Jane stared at the microcassette player for a moment before she slowly pressed PLAY.
As she listened, she felt her face go white. She was so filled with disbelief that she rewound the tape and listened to it twice.
She slowly shook her head. “That . . . can’t be him,” she half-whispered.
“Oh, I assure you, it is,” Lucien said in a regrettable voice. “If you wish to speak with him, he’s downstairs.”
Jane was silent for a moment before she nodded. “Just lead the way.”
Lucien obeyed as Jane armed herself with her .45 Cold, not sure who she should protect herself from at that point.
Jane watched as Lucien continued to walk ahead of her. That was when she noticed that he didn’t cast a shadow on the floor.
Lucien opened the door to the basement as they went downstairs.
“Well,” Jane demanded, “where is he?”
Lucien pointed at the empty chair in bewilderment. “He was right there. I had him tied up and everything.”
Jane studied Lucien blankly before she gasped as John grabbed her from behind. He was holding a gun to her head. “I’m sorry, Jane. I have to protect myself from you and him.”
Lucien stared at John in rage—so much so that he didn’t realize his eyes had turned red. “Coward,” Lucien hissed.
Lucien’s movements were so quick that Jane didn’t even see his next movements. Literally, in a blink of an eye, Lucien was standing next to her, grabbing John by the throat before tossing him aside.
Lucien then turned to Jane, who stared up at him. “What in the world are you?” she whispered.
Lucien shook his head. “Something terrible,” he whispered.
