  Why I Am Me

I wonder what they had on their minds
as they traveled through their daily lives.
I wonder what made the differences,
between complacency and one that thrives.

I realize the differences make us interesting
and our fallacies keep us down to earth.
But what is it that makes a great man, great?
Is it learned or do we get it at birth?

What makes a man become a poet,
or a surgeon that works with a knife?
What is it that makes me, me?
and just where do I go in life?

The answers here, are always uncertain
for your destiny is a course you chart.
You must decide just what you want
and make some kind of plan to start.

No one else can give you the answer
to the question of, " Why Am I ME?"
You chart the course, you make the plan,
besides who else would you be?

This is a great inspiring poem I love it! It's hard trying to figure out who u r and what u give in life. I'm still trying to figure it out myself but I'm a working progress! Ha ha thanks for the great write!

Good job it wasn't what I expected, but then I never was, I thought you were going to give me the missing piece to the puzzle but even though you didn't you still uncovered a whole heck of a lot. Thank you

This is exactly how I feel, and think when someone looks at me. What is the image I give off, whether physically, or when I express myself through writing, and drawing/painting. Pierre is right, it is a great philosophical question, and I think the answer to that, a long with many, will arrive when our bodies expire, and we enter a new life.

Great philosophical question, that.
Why am I who I am? Because I am a unique personality. If one beleives in reincarnation and study dreams, one can know.
There is an "intention" behind all our lives that is carried out and is expressed in different circumstances and different sets of "lives". But the same intention is always there.
Good question. I answered it, for myself.
I am who I am because I choose to express myself the way I always was.

I like this poem a lot. I've wondered these things too. I'm still looking for me a little. One thing if i wasn't who i am now, then..( Who would I be?)
Good poem!

This is so cool.
I like the meaning of the poem.
It is so real.

This is good I think people should question things more often insted of just going along with it..but theres always a point were you kinda have to stop thinking too...hmm you got me thinking...well anyways great job!

I don't read enough to be able to get philosophical like James, suffice to say that the question you raise is a deep one. All we can be is ourselves and it is when we try to be someone other than ourselves that we run into trouble.
Great write.

Ah, the metaphysical question of who we really are! Carl Jung said our various roles and labels are just our small egos functioning in the practical world. The whole self is something much larger and incomprehensible, like love or Being and the like.
One of his beautifil quotes goes something like this,
" The self is a circle whose circumference is nowhere and whose center is everywhere."

Nice write.

Jim
