  Junior ( The Colt )

They say he was born in the back of a wagon while on the trail from out east. California was the promise land and his parents were part of the great move west in the early 1800's. The trail was very long and it took months to get to where they were going. They got their piece of ground, about 500 acres and that is where William was raised. His name was William, but he hated the name Billy. He wanted to be called, Junior.

The west was young and the land was hard to tame. The neighbors all lived at least a days ride away on horseback and the nearest town took a three day ride just to get there. Junior was an only child, so he had learned how to amuse himself with daydreaming.

When Junior was very young, his father took him to town. They were going for supplies for the winter. While they were in the livery, a fight broke out in town and that is when Junior got his first taste of a gunfight! The men were fierce looking and one dressed all in black with a pearl handled gun. Junior had read stories about gunfights, but words had not caught the excitement that seeing one, brought to Junior. After that all his spare time was spent dreaming about being the fastest gun in the west. He would dream of the big black stallion he would ride and the pearl handled guns that he had. There weren't very many that carried two guns, but Junior dreamed he was fast with both and that made him twice as dangerous! When ever he walked down the street, everyone would move out of his way like he was parting the waters. They all called him, Sir to his face and whispered to one another after he had walked by about the men he had killed. Exactly the dream that would fill the mind of a nine year old!

When your the fastest gun in the west. You have to expect that every once in a while someone is going to have to find out if it's true. You must keep your self fit and trim. You can't let yourself become over confident. Yet confidence is what gives you the edge and Junior was very confident in his dream. He would meet them in the center of town at noon. " You make the first move. " Is what He would always tell them before they made the mistake. The mistake of thinking they had a chance. Junior was much to fast and he had won many gunfights in his dreams. The pearl handles of his guns were smooth with wear and when he drew his guns they glistened as they fired their rounds. Then he would blow the smoke from the barrel and spin them back into their holsters! It was all in a days work for the gunfighter and in Juniors dream this was the life he longed to have!

The farm was not exactly a main street and the chores did not involve pearl handled guns. Junior spent most of his time feeding the livestock and tending to the cows and chickens. The pigs pretty much took care of themselves except that Junior would slop the hogs twice a day ( that's what he called their food, slop ) and their pen always stunk. Juniors father had given him a colt for his Christmas present a year ago and Junior was so anxious for the colt to grow up so that he could ride it. The colt was brown in color, but Junior had always wanted a black stallion, so he called his colt, " Midnight".

Junior would brush the colt every night and walk it around the stable for exercise. This was the weekend that Junior and his dad were going to saddle midnight for the first time and Junior was going to do the breaking. Junior was a little scared and hoped that he did not do anything to make his dad mad. Junior was so excited and he waited patiently for his dad to return from the field that morning.

It was about noon when his dad finally returned and they went over how Junior was to break the colt. Midnight was to to excited about the saddle on her back and when Junior climbed on, all hell broke loose! Midnight jumped and kicked, the colt would run around a little and then start jumping and kicking some more! This went on for about ten minutes. Then midnight calmed brown and Junior was able to guide it around the stable. Junior's dad was so proud and told Junior to take a ride and check the back fifty acres. It would take Junior till dark to finish and his dad thought that would have the colt trained well. Junior's dad opened the gate and Junior rode off to check out the back fifty!

I didn't really understand the title. Is Junior the boy or the colt? Or are you trying to symbolize the boys spirit with the colt? This story has potential but you didn't really write this piece with any emotion. It is very flat and needs something more... something prize worthy.

That was it? I was hoping to hear about a large gun fight at the end where Junior was victorious!

It's amazing to think of how life was back then, and the different types of dreams. But in a way, they're all so similiar. My nephew dreams of being a great soldier. The most powerful "defeater of badguys" in the all world, and to be hailed as a hero.

I guess, in a way, the dreams don't change. Just the setting and the tecnhology do, though.
