Tears for the Living, Tears for the Dead
by Lyle Berry (Age: 61)
copyright 09-14-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

No words can express the horror of the events, which took place in America on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Mine caught in my throat for days. Thus far, only this
bitter little poem has escaped from the rubble of my mind…

Tears for the Living, tears for the Dead,
I sob and watch the misery, confusion racks my head.
“Have you seen my husband, have you seen my wife?”
“Why has someone taken my beloved’s life?”

Johnny doesn’t understand, Suzy wants to know:
“Where’s my Mom and Daddy? I’m missing both you know?”
Five thousand bodies, ten thousand body bags -
The President says “Victory!” the spirit in me sags.

Muslim Fundamentalists? Can you give terror a name?
America and I will never, ever be the same.
Tears for the Living, tears for the Dead,
I sob and watch the misery, confusion racks my head.

Lyle, Again you hit all the emotions at once.
I don't think that anyone will forget where they were or what they were doing when the attack happened. We'll also not forget staying home for the next three or four days, glued to CNN crying at everything that happened. I got misty all over again reading this. It was a great poem. Thank you, Jackie

I tried to write while I was stranded, I tried to express myself and couldn't. I have a notbook full of scribbles and nonsense thoughts. I did manage to write a letter to my brother, and from that I have written some things since to try to capture my thoughts at that time. It was so hard, so sad.... so terrible. I've read of things, and lived thru my own hell...but still, as I have always known and believed... there are others who have it worse.

A fine write Lyle, it is so sad that this has happened. I was gonna write about it but could not stay focused enough, I feel I may be able to today.
It is horrendous that we the poets of the world, who have to write what is in our hearts, have to bring forth such images.

Thanx for sharing this with us Lyle, I know how hard it is to write about such things.

Peace,

jm

It is so hard to find words at a terrible time like this....
