Flying in a Micro-light
by Brian Dickenson (Age: 73)
copyright 04-23-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Candy floss castles of cumulus.
Afloat in a sea of sky.
You're soaring between the ramparts,
Showing the birds how to fly.

Poised like a hunting falcon,
Scanning the earth below.
Watching the people; like insects,
As you taste what most never know.

The sensation of being god-like
As you ascend to the heavens above.
Feelings beyond verbalization.
Almost; like being in love.

Just you and the clouds about you.
Riding the winds on high.
With the taste of fear to guide you.
For it's all too easy to die.

You're back safe and sound on the tarmac.
But your mind; it's still in the clouds.
How you long once again to be up there.
Away from the madding crowds.

Just as an afterthought: my father, when with Pan American Airways and even after that, introduced us all to flying. I have always flown when possible and this includes small Cessnas. Single-engines, two seaters. The closest feeling to freedom that I can think of beyond flying is motorcycle riding. So much for a well-spent childhood. Thanks for the memories and for some deeper significances that may be only in my own mind, but still....

Indeed!! Those who love to fly and have flown, will immediately want to be back is the sky. Those who haven't may have a taste of what it's like, including the final fear and longing to yet again be in the sky. Excellent imagery and alliteration. And yet, through all of getting caught up in the magic of your spell, I sense a deeper meaning underneath. Faint, but there. Interesting. Forgive the "Spock" attitude. That was meant for me, not for you.

I absolutely LOVE the imagery in this one! The first line sets the pace, and you never miss a beat! I could almost feel a little turbulence as I read this one! Fantastic!

Gives me a feeling like I have sometimes when I'm floating along in a daydream, and written in your own great, inimitable style. I wish you and David
would go away-I have no chance out here with you talents around lol.

Keep 'em coming Brian.

Thanks for being here.

Rich

This must be what hang-gliding is all about...now I understand those that think hang-gliding is "fun". Oh yes, you got me with the "Candy floss castles of cumulus". After all that my teachers ever said about being careful with alliteration, they never meant anything like that line. That one will dance in my head for awhile....Great stuff.
