The Chosen
Chapter 19
by Natalie Amaral
copyright 09-14-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

The police department were completely baffled when they had arrested John for conspiracy in aiding to commit murder. When they heard the recorded conversation between himself and Lucien DeNieux, none of them could believe that was the same man who was once their chief.

That was until they had actually gone to Lucien DeNieux's home to arrest him. He was raving away like a lunatic.

Out of all his former officers, Jane was the one who was the most in shock about how he turned out. She had known him for many years, and she had never suspected that he would never flip out like that. He had once been the honest types who were true to his badge. Now he had come across the likes of Mariam Simone--whoever she was.

Once all the officers had gotten into their squad cars and driven away, Lucien made Jane some tea. The two of them sat in the kitchen with the curtains drawn and closed because of the sun being up.

The two of them sat across from one another. For the first time since Lucien had met her, Jane actually appeared as though she was beginning to trust him.

"So, David's right," Jane said, softly. "You're really a vampire."

Lucien gave her an awkward smile. "He actually told you that."

"I didn't give him a choice." She hesitated. "But that explains everything. Criminals like David Kobliski don't confess so easily."

"I see."

Jane hesitated. "How long has John been acting as your keeper?"

"A few years--shortly after his wife died."

"That wasn't when . . . well, he got the idea . . ."

Lucien quickly shook his head. "I should have seen it coming," he confessed. "He had asked questions about my immortality. He had asked what it would be like, what the advantages could be, that sort of thing. Yet I never once thought he was serious about actually wanting to be this."

"So, you never encouraged it?"

"Absolutely not--no. No one should ever WANT to know the kind of price there is for immortality." Lucien sighed. "I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy."

Jane frowned. "Have you ever killed anyone?"

Lucien remained silent.

"I wouldn't be surprised if you did. I won't tell anyone--no one would believe me if I tried."

"The last time I did was centuries ago. I acted as a vigilante of a sort. Then I stopped when I found a . . . unique way of feeding--mostly from animals. That was, until blood banks became available. I'd manage to turn into mist after they'd close and take some. To make up for it, I'd leave a large donation behind."

Jane nodded.

"I don't blame you if you have any judgements about my life."

"I would, but I can't say I do. You saved my life as well as Kaitlin's." Jane gave him a kind look. "You're not as terrible as you say you are."

Lucien stared at Jane for a moment. "You're too kind." He hesitated. "Kaitlin . . . how was she when you left?"

"She was still sleeping. She's still pretty pale and weak. The doctors told me she may be suffering from anemia, but that's not really the case, is it?"

"No--I wish it was. At least things would be much simpler. I had thought I destroyed Mariam, but she disintegrated into mist as I shoved the stake through her heart. She should have turned to dust."

"Maybe she only disappeared and wanted you to think she was dead."

Lucien closed his eyes. "I should have known better. I should have been more prepared."

"Don't blame yourself. We have to think about protecting Kaitlin now." Jane checked her watch. "I should be going back to the hospital to see her. The sun's almost down. Are you going to meet me there?"

"Yes."

"Fine." Jane rose to her feet. "You're wrong about yourself. You're not so terrible at all."
