The Lighthouse
by David Pekrul
copyright 04-24-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

I look o’er the ocean,
But there’s no reflection,
Just blackness and darkness,
No spectrum in sight.
My compass is broken,
I’m taking on water,
And no one is with me,
Alone in my plight.

The day started fine,
As we left Port Erasmus,
The waters were quiet,
No ripple in sight.
The crew was excited,
To be on this voyage,
We’d done lots of planning,
And all things were right.

We sailed in the sunset,
This voyage was special,
We partied together;
The ocean was flat.
We sang to the music,
Then toasted the morning,
With too much fine whiskey,
Don’t know where we’re at.

The waves came from nowhere,
And quite unexpected,
Our ship was in trouble,
Now what could we do?
We pulled down the riggings,
And lowered the anchor,
The waves kept on coming,
We knew we were through.

I look o’er the ocean,
And see not a shipmate,
The tempest is rough, and
They're all overboard.
I’m making my way,
Just the best I know how to,
I’m scared and so frightened,
I cry to the Lord.

When things are the blackest,
Don’t think I will make it,
I see a small glimmer,
Away up ahead.
A lighthouse from nowhere,
I think I can make it,
I must reach the lighthouse,
Or else I am dead.

The sun is above me,
I’m out of the ocean,
Stretched out on a sandbar,
But where, I don’t know.
The lighthouse is nowhere,
I look all around me,
But all I can see,
Is a man, all aglow.

It must be an angel,
It wasn’t a lighthouse,
It must have been Jesus
Who watched over me.
My body is here,
But my soul is in Heaven,
I died with my shipmates,
My spirit is free.

This is a very good story. The end was kind of sad and happy. sad to be dead, happy to have gone to heaven. Good write, Anthony

Terrific maritime poem. It ends on a spiritual note and the verse carried me right to heaven. Great job.

Excellent, I love a poem that tells a good story.
The part about the waves from nowhere rings true. It's happened to me in the past. The sea needs respect at all times.
Liked the twist at the end.
Brian.

Great imagery and symbolism! The lighthouse can mean so many things. I enjoyed this.

Jim
