11-Sep-2001 (In Memoriam)
by Ross H. Bruce

Age Rating: 18 to 127

We grieve with thee -- New York, New York!
Natives of the world are within your soul.
For in one early calm Tuesday morning,
Two white ravens pillaged your mighty poles.

Innocent souls died but would not be in vain;
Heroes were made in this dark circumstance.
Under the rubbles of fear, soot and weeping pain
Fifty stars united and citizens clasped their hands.

And from soot and ashes vengeance will rise.
The eagle will spread its wings of wrath,
To fight for justice and freedom of the world
From the dark side that thwarts the meaning of soul.

Then soon the bloodied poles will rise again:
Red, white and blue will be the colors of the day.
To remind all the natives of this cruel world;
Tablet of freedom shall forever stay.

Thanks, Ross. So many wrote after this tragedy. You did it so well.

Very beautiful tribute, Ross. You spoke very warmly and with great respect from the heart.

This is not a critism....it's merely an observation and not totally reflected upon your poem. I've read and heard over and over the planes being referred to as "white ravens." Which in that context symbolize death and destruction.

Yet, in the native communities I've been involved in.....ravens are a protected bird. Why? Because they symbolize rebirth. Ravens in the native culture (up north - Canada) are actually a protected species. It's actually against the law to shoot one. The white raven is rare. If one sees a white raven, there is hope and change for the future. The white raven is very powerful - not in the sense of destruction but in the sense of spirituality.

Yet....in the case of the terrorist actions, white ravens are used to symbolize destruction, hate, and death.

It's a nitpick because I know most people are not aware of different native spiritual beliefs. And mean absolutely no offense by stating those planes were white ravens. I just thought you might find it interesting (and maybe others would too).

It's nice to see a family finally all together, altho too often it's at a funeral. I feel the same has happened with our nation, and even the world. It took a tragedy to unite them. People often leave the funeral promising to keep in touch. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. I hope this time... they do!

This is a well written tribute in memory of those who lost their lives, were injured or lost loved ones/friends in this terrible action. Well done.
