Work
by David Pekrul
copyright 05-03-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

I wake each day and go to work,
What is it all about?
To give myself throughout day,
No thanks within or out.

But I must be responsible,
I know you will agree,
But how I wish that I could feel,
Some time could be for me.

To sit around and read a book,
Or maybe take a hike,
To do the things I really want,
The things I really like.

But time will pass, the day will come,
My work will all be done,
Then looking back, at last I'll know,
Each day was worth the run.

I hope I've made a difference, in
The lives put in my care,
Each day I worked and struggled, was
Because I really cared.

So now I pass the torch to those,
Who follow in my path,
To let them know that in this life,
They need to do their task.

And nurture those trust in them,
To care for all their needs.
And know that God will look at them,
And in His heart be pleased.

I really do like the way you rewrote this poem. It was then and is now, a good poem for one of your first! I think I will always work, but I do intend to go on a walkabout for a few years in the near future! Anthony

One is "never free without a fetter" unless one is dead. It is hard to make a difference but when we do it is really great. Retirement brings more work most elders will tell you they work harder than they did in their working years.
