The Trout
by Brian Dickenson (Age: 73)
copyright 05-16-2005

Age Rating: 4 to 127

A gentle splash
a glistening flash:
Trout has taken fly.

A screaming run
the fight begun;
adrenaline surging high.

A headlong dive
to stay alive
or on the bank to lie.

A bed of weed's
that's all it needs:
Hope begins to die.

The trout's head shakes,
the leader breaks.
'Lost it!' Comes the cry.

But I'm not downhearted,
the season's started.
We've kissed the winter goodbye.

With apologies to Mr I Walton.

A lot of good stuff going on in such a short and seemingly light-hearted poem. A serious picture of life yet told in a humorous way. The feeling of nature is most evident. The fish survived and you lost, but the fish had more at stake.

A well-crafted poem as are most of your poems.

Your friend,

Rich

This is spectacular! The struggle to survive, in any species is the dynamo of life itself. You have captured this struggle effortlessly, using beautiful metaphors. A great poem comes from a moment of sheer inspiration and I can tell that you were truly inspired. The flow and imagery are superb! Congratulations for a near masterpiece!

The poem's, structure, meter, and rhythm all convey, nicely, the excitement and the lightheartedness that this event depicts. Very nice!

Spoken like a true fisherman. I never really got into it, of course neither did my Dad until he retired, then you couldn't get him out of the boat.
