Children have been coming to the Museum at Newcastle as if they had been evacuated. Part of their term work.

They came to Discovery by the score
Evacuated just like the war
Children of all shapes and ages
Carrying gas mask boxes and lunches
In single file and then in bunches.
Came on the train down from Carlisle
A great adventure, what a smile
Dressed like evacuees were dressed before
Short pants and dresses, uniforms galore
Met at the Station by a Porter
Dressed in the uniform of old
Very bright with lots of gold
Came and talked about the War
Told them what we knew and saw.
All showing their Identity cards
Answered questions by the yards
Hope they never have to live it
So they don't have to come and tell
Another generation the story of a war
And what they lived and what they saw.

You have told a very interesting story with this poem. It makes you want to know more and to see what the children thought, how they processed this experience. It shook my imagination awake and left me with my curiosity aroused. There is more to this than a single poem, I think, I hope.
well done. I remember the gas masks and the air raid shelters, along with the blitz on Liverpool.
Those childhood memories will never go away.
