"…..and this is your bedroom, isn't it cool?" Bobby said with excitement in his voice as he pulled Mary-Anne by the hand, showing off her new home, "Do you like the kitty posters? That was my idea."
Mary-Anne sat down heavy on the bed covered in a soft pink bedspread and looked around with disbelief. After all that had happened, this family wanted her to live here. Bobby was still her friend. Stunned, Mary-Anne stayed silent, looking around the room, trying to gather it all in. Afraid she'd wake up and find out, this had all been a dream.
"Hey! Did you see this?" Bobby grabbed a stuffed cat, sat down beside Mary-Anne, pressed the middle and placed it to her ear, "See it purrs and everything! Isn't that too cool?"
Bobby let go as Mary-Anne took hold of the toy, jumped up and grabbed another item.
"And this is so pretty, just like girls want, right? A pretty jewelry box with a ballerina dancer. It makes music. Listen!"
Bobby wound up the box, then opened the lid. The tin sounds of the Nutcracker Suite filled the air as the plastic ballerina danced in circles. Mary-Anne dropped the stuffed cat onto the bed and burst into tears. Bobby quickly put down the jewelry box, pulled Mary-Anne towards him and wiped away her tears.
"It's just. It's just no one has ever done this before!" Mary-Anne sobbed, "And that song, that was a song I remember my mum playing for me on the piano. Did I tell you she could play the piano?"
Bobby sat silent, wondering if he should listen or go get his mum. It seemed different this time though, she wasn't angry and he didn't feel afraid. In the end, Bobby opted to stay with Mary-Anne, knowing his parents were in the other room.
"She used to play it all the time and sing me such pretty songs. Then she met my dad and we moved. He sold the piano. But that was OK because my mum stopped singing anyways."
"Mary-Anne if it makes you sad, I could take it away. I mean, I didn't want you to be sad. I wanted to make you happy."
"Oh Bobby, you really did! Honest, cross my heart!"
"Bobby, Mary-Anne, time for lunch! Are you coming?" Lisa called out from the kitchen, "It's your favourite, KD and hot-dogs!"
"Come on Bobby, let's eat. I'm so starved!" Mary-Anne dried her tears and jumped off the bed. She turned and faced him, hands on her hips in mock anger with laughter in her voice, not quite reaching her eyes, "You really are crazy you know. Crazy for wanting me still as your friend."
"Ah Mary-Anne, let's just go eat," Bobby said quickly, feeling suddenly embarrassed, "I'm just glad you like it all."
As they headed towards the kitchen, Bobby continued to talk, "And hey, when we are done, let's see if mum will let us go to the park. They have a new swing set and I'm telling you Mary-Anne, when you swing, you swear you can touch the moon! It's amazing!"
"Cool!"
"Well there you both are, come on, lunch is getting cold."
Both children slid quickly into their chairs and began eating, smiling at one another and ready to take on the world….or the moon, whichever came first.
