The Chosen
Chapter 21
by Natalie Amaral
copyright 09-19-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Kaitlin lay so still, her features so pale, that Jane found it hard to believe thay had come to her aid just in time. The doctors had managed to save her, and give her another transfusion.

Jane stared at Lucien, who sat by Kaitlin's bedside, holding her hand. He had literally scrubbed his own hands clean after he realized he touched her bleeding throat to check her pulse--he was so mortified at what he was. Jane never realized the dept of his self-loathing until then.

After the doctors told Lucien that Kaitlin was out of danger, he angrily told them that she was not to be left alone again. He even threatened to sue the hospital should any further events take place.

Now he sat quietly, blood-red tears streaming down his face.

Jane stared at him. "I . . . are you okay?"

Lucien sighed. "I should have been here for her."

"Lucien, don't. Neither of us could have known."

Lucien looked up at Jane. "I should have--I know better than anyone." He hesitated. "I approached Kaitlin becaused I sensed she would be one of The Chosen. Now, I know that Mariam is only after her to get to me, I knew I had to be here to protect her and I wasn't."

"Don't talk like that. She's still human. As long as that's the case, Mariam hasn't won."

"L-Lucien . . ."

The soft whisper startled the both of them as they moved closer to Kaitlin, who turned to Lucien.

"Kaitlin, I'm here," he said.

"S-so . . . s-sorry," she muttered.

He stared at her, bewildered. "Whatever for?"

"I . . . thought . . . you were . . . attacking me . . . until I saw her . . ." she whispered.

Lucien squeezed her hand. "Don't try to talk; just rest."

"Forgive me."

"I forgive you."

Kaitlin then drifted off, the brief conversation wearing her out.

Jane's cell phone then went off before she answered it. "Hello," she said. "Yes, this is she. What? Oh, no. Well, did you see who it was? Were there any witnesses? Okay. I'll be there as soon as I can." She turned to Lucien, a sombre expression on her face.

Lucien turned away. "John's dead, isn't he?"

Jane frowned. "I don't like it when you read my mind."

"I didn't--it was written all over your face."

Jane studied him. "I hate to do this, but I have to go to the crime scene."

"I understand. I'll be here with her."

"Are you sure you're going to be okay?"

Lucien nodded. "I'll survive."

Jane was aghast at the sight of John's corpse. His back was broken. Judging from the bruises and cuts on his body, he didn't die a painless death.

"What happened?" Jane asked as she approached one of the officers.

He shrugged. "Beats me."

Jane stared at him. "He died like that, and no one saw or heard anything?"

"No one saw anything, but we definitely heard it." The officer shook his head. "We heard him screaming and crying out for help, but no one took him seriously. The next thing we knew, we heard these loud banging noises."

"Wasn't there a guard in here to keep watch or anything?"

"He was knocked unconscious. He doesn't remember a thing. We found this next to John's body." The officer held out a tiny sheet of paper.

Jane took it, uncrumpled it, and saw to her disgust that it was written in blood; John's blood, no doubt.

It said:

No mortal can stop me--I am invincible!

Those terrifying words confirmed Jane's suspicions about John's murder.
