Kaitlin sighed and moaned as she slowly opened her eyes. She was surprised to find Lucien still sitting at her bedside. Only now he was asleep, his head resting on her stomach. When she looked out the window, she saw that the skies were gray, not sunny, as it rained.
She watched him sleep and realized no breath escaped his lips. There was no movement in his chest as he was supposed to breathe. The sleep of the dead, she thought, wryly.
Yet she couldn't deny how beautiful he looked--even in his death-like stupor. His pake skin, his dark hair, his rugged skin. She couldn't resist reaching over to touch his dark curls.
That was when Lucien's eyes slowly opened before he rose his head. "Kaitlin," he said softly.
She smiled. "Hi. I thought you couldn't move during the day."
"We can. We're safe as long as we avoid the sun's rays. That's why I controlled the weather for it to be like that out there." He hesitated. "I didn't think it would be safe to leave you alone again."
"I'm only sorry I blamed you."
"Don't apologize."
She stared at him. "How can I not? If you truly wanted me dead, you wouldn't have saved my life, let alone brought me here." She hesitated. "Why did you start following me in the first place? Please, I must know."
Lucien nodded. "After all that you've been through, you deserve an explanation. The truth is, I no longer know why except . . . something about you drew me to you." He sighed. "When I first met you, I thought you were one of the Chosen--as I was." Lucien sadly shook his head. "That's why I'm the . . . THING I am today. In your case, Mariam is only using you as a pawn to get to me."
"So . . . I'm not . . ."
"No. I thought you were. That is, until I saw the dreaded teethmarks on your throat." Lucien shuddered. "I can't let her transform you--not if I have anything to say about it."
Kaitlin stared at him in confusion. "How did it happen for you?"
Lucien told her about how he mysteriously had fallen ill before he had succumbed to his mortal death. He then told her every detail after that with his stay with Mariam. Once he was done telling her about Mariam throwing him in the dungeon with that boy, Kaitlin gasped. "Oh, how dreadful for you!" she uttered.
Lucien sighed. "It took every ounce of energy not to feed upon him."
Kaitlin impulsively sat up and took his hand in hers. She didn't care about how cold his skin was. "I want to help fight her."
Lucien shook his head. "No. It's too dangerous."
"It's no less dangerous for you as it is for me." For the first time since he met her, Lucien noticed a sense of determination about her.
Lucien nodded. "I don't think this is a good idea, but I doubt I'll be able to talk you out of it."
"That's right--you won't."
"Fine; but not until you're well. I'll tie you to the bed in the meantime if I have to."
Kaitlin giggled. "You don't have to worry about that."
Lucien stared at her for a long moment as her smile faded. He couldn't resist moving closer. "You're absolutely beautiful." Impulsively, he kissed her passionately on the lips.
She threw her arms around his shoulders and moaned, pulling him closer.
