Every Moment With You
by Anthony Lane Stahlhut (Age: 48)
copyright 06-21-2005

Age Rating: 4 to 127

I thought I knew what love was,
assumed I knew what to do.
I found that I was mistaken,
I didn't know what love was till you.

I never knew even half the feeling,
of love till you held my hand.
I felt of course that love was great,
never thought it could be so grand.

I had already given my heart
to the mother of my daughter and son.
Before my daughter was even born,
the partnership was already done.

I tried to protect what was left
of my broken and mangled heart.
I knew I couldn't take the chance
of again letting it get torn apart.

I tried to attempt, to play the field,
have a girl for everyday of the week.
I guess you'd say it was only fitting,
my barrel of fun sprang a leak.

Then I came across you, woman
and my whole life began to spin.
Feelings that were buried deep
were coming to the surface again.

This time something was different.
Somehow I did not feel any fear.
The more I tried for separation,
the more I wanted you near.

Because I had already lost one family,
I was afraid of the children you had.
I wasn't a father to my own children,
How the hell could I ever be their dad?

There must be someone else in charge
other than just you and me.
Someone that was pulling the strings
Bringing together our two destinies.

All perfect pieces of the puzzle,
How could so many become just one.
Our seven broken lives were joined,
into a family before all was done!

Through our partnership, I learned compassion,
by our mistakes, we learned how to live.
I found that if I wanted love,
first I must learn how to give.

Funny I was supposed to be the teacher,
yet the children really taught me.
They taught me to love and how to live,
to be all that I can be.

Somewhere in, all that commotion
living life and all we went through.
I found as the days turned into years,
I was falling more in love with you.

I guess the story has started,
A few chapters written in the book.
You're still as wonderful as the day we met
I'm glad to be on the ride we took.

When the story has finally ended,
there is one thing I know I must do.
Be able to look into your eyes
and spend every moment with you!

Anthony ,

I re-read this poem and it is wonderfully smooth in rhyme and rhythm. And you lost none of your great emotions.

I hear your beautiful poet's voice--loud and clear,

Rich

Hello Anthony,

Beautiful sentiments here. Great expression of feeling-very descriptive. This poem touched my heart.
One nit-pick, if I may-some of the rhyme words though excellent seem to have broken the smoothness of meter and rhythm- I dunno'..

What do you think? Perhaps you could choose different rhyme words or rearrange word order
or change the phrases between the rhymes, although certainly not at the cost of spoiling a very beautiful poem of deep and wonderful feelings
and deeply expressive impact.

One of the most difficult things for me is to strike an over-all sense of balance in my poems, but the balance between rhyme and meter is still the most difficult. Perhaps that's why free-verse is so popular-no need of rhymes so meter comes easier. Just "nits" on my part-I'm mostly a free-verse guy.
You're the better man.

A great read,

Rich

I don't think I'll ever learn to write the way you do, with a different emotion in every paragraph.
In this poem I could feel your pain, your anxiousness (is that a word???), and, most of all, your love.
Great job, and happy writing!

This is a brilliant poem as it shows such love and not only that but what this love has taught you and done to you (just as david said new beginning, growth, maturity etc). just proves that love can be a great lesson in love just as many other things can be too...jeep it up.

Emy

Great sentiments. I can relate and how lucky you are to be able to write your heart. Excellent.

This is a beautiful and fitting poem, Anthony. I liked this a lot. I think some work needs to be done with grammar and spelling, especially in the first verse, but other than that, this is a wonderful declaration of your love.

I hope one day I receive something like this from whomever I wind up with for the rest of the figurative "eternity" LOL (Had to pretend to be smart)

Wow! I'll bet this got you Brownie Points --Really, this is such a wonderful sentiment. It shows heartache, a new beginning and growth, maturity and contentment. Well done.
