Kaitlin moaned as their kiss grew more passionate. She pressed herself tightly against him as she continued to grasp onto his shoulders while his arms circled her tiny waist.
Then, to her surprise, he pulled away, a look of regret in his eyes. "Forgive me," he whispered.
She shook her head. "There's nothing to forgive." She gave his shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "After all, you didn't do it alone."
Lucien turned to face her, his desire for her growing even stronger.
"Am I interrupting something?"
The both of them looked up and saw Jane walk into the room.
"No," Lucien lied, avoiding her gaze.
Jane turned to Kaitlin with a look of concern on her face. "Are you okay?"
Kaitlin nodded. "I'm fine; thanks to you both."
"What did you find out?" Lucien asked.
"From the looks of it, John died a pretty nasty death." Jane gave both Lucien and Kaitlin the vivid description of John's corpse. Kaitlin paled in reaction as Lucien's expression became grim.
"Here," Jane said softly as she reluctantly gave the note to Lucien. "You might want to look at this."
Lucien studied the sheet of paper for a long moment as he sadly shook his head. "A note written in blood; that is so much like her," he said in a disgusted manner.
Kaitlin looked up at Jane. "What are we going to do about this?"
Lucien quickly turned to her. "Neither one of you are going to do anything. I, however, have to meet up with her."
"Alone? Are you out of your mind?"
"I must. Neither of you know this woman as I do."
"You can get yourself killed!"
"So could you if you accompany me. We already agreed that you wouldn't get involved in her destruction until you're well."
"He's right, Kaitlin," Jane said. "You can't do this in you're condition."
"Fine; someone has to go with him."
"No." Lucien had a sharp tone in his voice as he said the word. "There are enough lives endangered with her prowling the streets as it is." He looked at Jane. "Stay here with Kaitlin."
"Lucien--."
"It's not safe for you to be alone," Lucien interrupted Kaitlin. "You know what happened last night. The first chance she gets, she'll attack you again--or worse."
Kaitlin didn't say anything, but nodded in reluctant agreement. As much as she disliked the idea of him fighting Mariam alone, she knew he was right.
Lucien kissed Kaitlin on the forehead before he rose to his feet and turned to Jane. "Promise me you'll take care of her."
"I promise; you just take care of yourself."
"I'll try."
"You're not going to try; you'll do it. For Kaitlin's sake if not your own."
Lucien stared at Jane for a long moment before he walked out of the room.
