Laura Secord

Age Rating: 10 to 127

(A Bit of Canadian History)

To Canada they were Loyalists,
To America they were traitors,
With the likes of Benedict Arnold,
And all those Yankee haters.

But there is one that you don’t know,
With the States she had some discord,
From Massachusetts she moved up north,
A girl called Laura Secord.

In 1813, in the midst of the war,
With America fighting the British,
And Yankees attacking again and again,
The Empire was getting skittish.

They captured the home of Laura’s folks,
To harbour their sick and dying,
And Laura heard them discussing their plans,
They didn’t know she was spying.

She made an excuse to leave her home,
To visit a brother for days,
The Yankees said, “She’s just a girl”.
So they let her wander away.

For many days she walked the land,
“Til she came to a Mohawk camp,
She told them all she heard and saw,
And became a Canadian champ.

The Yankees came to fight again,
And this time they were beat,
Because of the courage of one small girl,
The battle was complete.

I actually have heard of Laura Secord and , I don't remember hearing that she was a traitor, but that she bravely avenged the wounding of her husband and the commandeering of her home by, in her mind, the enemy...In all events it is a great story of "men" again underestimating the power of a woman...interesting piece of history, David.

Well David, I've learned something new today. I have never heard of this lady. Then what I do not know about your beautiful country is legion.
Now I will make a point of reading up on the history.
I like the poem, she must have been some lady.
Thank you for this.
Brian.

I like the methodical and careful construction of this poem. I don't know if this poem is intended for the contest that I've heard so much about. If it is, I think that it has an excellent chance of winning, since it is done in good taste and it is visually stimulating. Very good work.
