By the time it had stopped raining, it was already evening. Lucien had been walking around the city streets searching for Mariam. During the earlier hours, he was unable to sense her presence. Now, he knew she was close.
Where are you? he wanted to ask out loud. I know you're here somewhere. Why do you hide?
Yet even as he asked himself that question, he knew what the answer was. This sick cat and mouse game was just that to her: a game. What was even worse, she had brought an innocent party in this situation: two including Jane. Then again, this wasn't the first time Mariam had done so.
"Ah, Lucien," a soft voice of a woman said. "How handsome you still are."
Lucien quickly turned around and realized that he had walked into a deserted alley. "Mariam," he said in a cold voice.
She smiled at him. Her red hair had been died black, and judging from her skin tone, it was quite obvious she was wearing makeup to hide the paleness of her skin. Either way, Lucien easily recognized her. "You're not still upset about last night? You know, you really must learn to share."
Lucien glared at her. "There's no reason to involve Kaitlin in this kind of life. Leave her out of this."
"What? I only mean to give her what you've always denied yourself--eternal life."
Lucien stormed closer towards her angrily. "Whatever dealings you have with me, you deal with me. There is no reason for you to transform her. I became this way due to an illness. As for what you're doing to her, there's no excuse for it."
Mariam looked at him blankly for a moment before she smirked. Then a giggle escaped her lips which turned into a mocking laugh that grew louder and louder as it became even more mocking.
Lucien stared at her in confusion. "Why do you laugh?"
Mariam took a deep breath to steady herself. "After all these centuries, you still haven't figured it out?"
"Figured what out?"
"Oh, you poor dear! You were never ill! It was I who transformed you! I merely did it little by little so that no one would have any suspicions about your so-called ailment!"
Lucien slowly shook his head. "It's not true."
"Ah, but it is. Don't you remember anything about having any nightmares while you were undergoing your transformation? You dreamed about a woman who appeared to you in the night with sharp fangs and would leave with blood dripping from her lips? Well, I have news, my dear Lucien: it was no dream. That woman was me--and your blood was the sweetest of all!"
Lucien stared at her as she grinned with delight, a feeling of rage overcoming him. Unable to suppress himself any longer, he lunged at her as he let out a scream of fury. He wrapped his hands around her throat in attempt to strangle her, even though he knew it would do no good. In fact, the harder he tried to choke her, the more she laughed at him.
"Still such a weakling, Lucien!" Mariam shouted, gripping onto his wrists now. "That's why you will never defeat me." With that, she revealed her fangs, and, in fury, she sharpened her nails and scratched his chest and stomach, causing his shirt to tear.
That was when she screamed and recoiled at the sight of the crucifix around his neck.
"You are wrong!" Lucien shouted, holding the sacred symbol out to her. "I am MUCH stronger than you!"
Mariam howled as she ran and jumped up in the air, flying away from him.
Suddenly, a vehicle darted into view, just at the end of the alley. When Lucien saw who it was that was driving, he was stunned to see that it was Jane.
"Lucien!" she shouted. "Lucien, come on!"
He quickly ran to the passenger's side, and was even more surprised to find Kaitlin sitting in the back seat.
"Why are you both here?" he demanded. "I had everything under control!"
Kaitlin studied Lucien carefully. Why did he seem more upset with Mariam than angry at the both of them for coming?
