I'm 86 Years Old Today
by David Pekrul
copyright 07-05-2005

Age Rating: 10 to 127

I’m 86 years old today,
And look back on my life,
I raised a couple real great kids,
And had a loving wife.

A little house to call my own,
A yard in which to putter,
But now I’m slowly wearing down,
My mind at times will stutter.

Remembering things from distant past,
Forgetting yesterday.
Did my children come to visit?
I can’t really say.

These days I think about the past,
And things that I have done,
The many battles I have fought,
The many races run.

I may not know what day it is,
Or what I did last week,
I know that I fulfilled my life,
And that it is complete.

And now I’m really getting old,
And soon I’ll be in Heaven,
But if I don’t see God this year,
………then I’ll turn 87.

Getting old is not that bad. I bet it scary, but the same thing could be hurled in my face that I don't know what it's like because I haven't lived it. But I believe in one rule: Don't linger just to regret.

Hey, all the elements of poetry that I care about come together in this piece. It contains, great imagery, good rhyming, uninterrupted fluidity, it is structurally sound and grammatically correct and to top it all, this poem has character and dignity. It really touched me. Oh, I forgot, it is humorous too! Just plain awesome, David!

You are really getting good. We've created a monster! Both my grandfathers made it to 86, neither of them saw 87. I know you have a ways to go, besides only the good die young so we don't have to worry about loosing you for a long time! This really reads well and I enjoyed it a lot, Anthony

Very well done David, if I didn't know better I would really think that you were 86. I'm not there yet, but I'm getting there.
I know men even older than this who still play golf with us, and still play well.
The oldest I know of is 94, and he has a 16 handicap.
He doesn't seem to realise he is this old,,,lol.
I'll be up there first so I'll book a tee time for you and I.
Brian

Great poem, David...Debra's right...we need to know...ARE YOU 86?! LOL anyway I love this...I should show it to my grandparents...yet my grandfather is like 10 years away from 86...oh well :) Five points for u

I like the ending....is that really true? Are you really turning 86? O.o lol, you need to WARN us.

This is a beautiful poem...I should show it to my step mom. She remembers watching her mother and father get this old, it really hurt her. I think that's the best thing though...to be that old, and to be able to look back on your life, and know you lived it to it's fullest. That's all I hope...that...and to see a wheel chair and a hot nurse at a 102. :)

Wonderful write, David. GAH! STOP WRITING GOOD POEMS! I'M STARTING TO LOSE ALL MY POINTS ON YOU GUYS!
